Yeah, I’m OK sticking with my Gen 1 R1T that I got with a great discount and does everything I need. In 2033 or so, I’ll see if my needs change based on my driving ability as I age.
We are biased toward seeing things the way the guy in the video does because we are all tech-focused here. For me, the thing I like most about my R1 is the driving dynamics and the main user interface. ALL models of the R2 will have that, and judging by the low uptake of FSD subscribers, the ADAS stuff isn't the make-or-break factor.
Rivian has deliberately chosen to offer the entry-level R2 at 45K instead of the better model, which will be priced at an unspecified amount. Probably 60ish. Maybe the price point is the most significant factor in getting sales, which is what Rivian needs most. This seems like a bad decision from my perspective, but if I'm being honest, I'm not the target demographic for a 45K dollar car. Given how much I spend on vehicles, I expect all the bells and whistles, but many people would rather save money and forgo features like self-driving.
I have a hard time getting my head around the "Eyes Off" driving RJ promised - does that mean I'm absolved of any liability if something happens while I'm in "Eyes Off" mode? I don't think so...Or, like Tesla, will it disengage the FSD a fraction of a second before an incident so that I am liable?
On the other hand, I would love to be able to nap while driving home late at night as long as the Rivian wakes me up when it pulls into my garage and closes the door...
