While I learned to drive (all on vehicles with no power steering) I learned pretty early that when wheels are not moving and attempting to turn, it takes A LOT more effort. These days, power steering masks that additional effort. In this case, pointing downhill also likely added additional weight onto the front wheels.

Breaking a rack in this instance isn't surprising.
This is the very reason why, I never turn the wheel when the vehicle is not moving. Just a lot of load put on the linkages.

The not so good news is that your insurance rates will probably go up until the insurance company has recouped the payout twice over.
I agree, nothing is for free. Insurance companies aren’t in business to lose money.

Well they have been getting my money for years without a claim. I guess it’s time to collect.

And the worst part is I never turn my wheels and it was only a slight grade but the police in that city are known for ticketing for not curbing your wheels so that’s the only reason why I did it. Should have just gotten a ticket l, it would have been cheaper.

When I left I turned my wheels to wheelsto drive off and heard a bang noise. I drove less than a 1/4 mile and my screen lit up with limited power, no brake stabilaztion, and no brake regenration.
To answer your question regarding all the lights popping up, you drove a quarter mile with a broken tie rod. I'm sure it spun all around and did a bunch of damage to wiring and lines under there. Can you stick your camera behind the wheel and take a pic?

Had no idea anything was wrong until the lights came on. It was then that the braking felt
Off. Can’t take a picture, it’s at the SC being repaired

Well future reference, loud bangs are bad. You should've felt a shaking and difficulty steering too. Did you feel anything unusual before the lights?

“Curbing your wheels”
What law are they applying? What city?

He is from the Bay Area so probably San Francisco. You are required to turn wheels out facing up hill and in facing down hill to prevent vehicle run aways on steep hills.

Edit, did a little research, back in 2023 it was a $63 fine, required on a street with 3% or greater slope.

”Tens of thousands of people are cited by SFMTA for not curbing their tires every year. So far in 2023, the transit agency has written up more than 13,000 people for the parking violation, according to city data. (For context, nearly 372,000 people have gotten tickets for not moving their car for street cleaning this year.) “

I dunno. I’ve curbed my wheels for years and never had an issue. I’ve also turned the steering wheel while stationary maybe 5000 times on a dozen cars without issue lol.

If you jammed the tired right close to the curb and then turned into it, it could be an issue. But damn, you would really have to keep pushing through in the face of a ton of resistance. These trucks do not have to be babied.

I too have curbed my wheels for years when on steep hills with all different kinds of cars and have never had this issue. The hill I was parked on wasn’t very steep at all just a slight incline. I still think the tie rod had to have some type of defect for it to bend like they said it did. I didn’t hit any pot holes, have not been off roading at all, and it was barely a hill. I have parked on steeper hills with my Rivian in the past without a problem.

Yes I’m a she and from the Bay Area. SF also tickets for not curbing tires. I was in the San Bruno who tickets for things like not curbing your wheels, parking on the wrong side of a residential street, having your car in the driveway with a flat tire etc…. Just ways to make more money for the city.

Yeah this sucks. Having the wheels turned is a safety thing on hills just like when making unprotected left turn you never turn your wheel ahead of time. In the ladder case if you get rear ended you will be sent directly into oncoming traffic.

It’s an honest mistake and it sucks…but ultimately not a defect in the vehicle hence the denial of warranty coverage in this case.

if you never have claims then your rates may be unaffected by this claim…I’m hoping for the best for you.

When Rivian repairs the vehicle, would it be possible to return to the same area and take a picture of how the vehicle was parked? Something seems odd . ?

Having driven much larger and heavier vehicles (with much heavier wheels & tires) than Rivian, and never had a bent tie-rod from on-road driving or parking or turning wheels while stopped, this might be a faulty product!?!

You can also request the damaged parts that are replaced to see if there is a visual indication of why/how the part failed.
