I will try this. I’m open to any workarounds. How do I get handsfree back. Not sure why Alexa needs data to start a call with a contact on my phone.

The workaround for hands-free is to initiate the request with your phone or watch. For example, you can say "hey siri" and as long as your phone (or better yet an Apple Watch) is within earshot it can be configured to listen to your request. If you're connected to the vehicle Bluetooth it will use the speakers to fulfill the request and provide audio feedback.

Android has similar functionality.

Shame they didn't contract with TMO. Didn't rivian drive their truck up from south America to test it?

TMO would be even worse than ATT for an "Adventure" vehicle, imo. T-Mobile coverage outside major metros is the worst.

TMO includes data roaming in hundreds of countries though. We have 4 TMO lines and two vzw in just our immediate family. TMO 5g is way faster than vzw and more value. They work in the same areas for us.

The only good thing about att is they are partnering with asts to provide cell service via satellite with a conventional cell modem.

The same reason your home devices need internet access to follow voice commands; it send your prompt to the cloud to be processed. About the only word processed locally is "Alexa"*.

*Some devices support very limited local voice control.

Not precise - I had Volt w/o OnStar data plan, and all worked fine: car remote open, climate, location, etc.

As for Android Auto / Carplay - these two have nothing to do with any plan at all.

There appears to be a valid reason that it cannot be activated outside continental North America. Rivian appears to be using the ATT IOT (Internet Of Things) LTE plan called LTE-M. The little bit I know about it is that it’s a cheaper plan and has specifically approved hardware, and Rivian is on the list. This LTE-M plan is only available in continental North America. While it uses the LTE wireless towers, it appears to be different signaling/protocols on a dedicated frequency spectrum, different from what our phones use.
