It is my understanding the R1T does not qualify for the $2,500 clean fuel rebate due to weight being over 8,500 pounds GVWR.

Curious if the R1S will qualify for the rebate as it weighs about a thousand pounds less than the R1T.

The main reason for EV rebates is to promote clean energy use the, fact the Rivian weights some 200 lbs more then the approved Lighting I agree is BS first because Ford is not making the stripped model so you can buy it. The issue with the cost is also weak if the object is to promote clean air and less pollution. I retired my 2000Toyota Tundra with 16 mpg for the Rivian. I still need a pickup and actually the same model Tundra in 2022 is about $70k. Of the approved EVs in CA about 70% are foreign manufacturers, that doesn’t look good for our Made in the USA mantra. A rich person can just as easily buy a high priced gas auto or PU, but the object is to promote cleaner air. So why can’t Rivian sell these facts, they are a USA manufacturer hiring Americans, they are pollution free, they weigh less then 300 lbs from an approved EV pickup maker and currently the only real option for pickup buyers? I think Rivian has to revisit this issue. Saying a person that can afford a Rivian doesn’t need the rebates doesn’t accomplish the main goal of owning and buying EVs.

Actually, the T and the S have almost identical weights. i believe the T weighs about 44 lbs. more than the S. While there are reports of the R1 curb weight being under 6000 lbs, it seems that a more realistic figure may be somewhere around 7000 +/- lbs. depending on who is reporting it and how the car is configured. Those who have taken delivery of these vehicles can probably report more accurate curb and gross vehicle weights.

All your points absolutely make sense, Ben. It’s a total BS and Rivian should throw their weight behind this and get some traction. Government should support American manufacturers, and leaving Rivian out doesn’t make any sense
