Well I guess I’m canceling. I put my deposit on the truck in December of 2018. I really wanted a rivian but…. I finally was able to see a R1S today and drive it and honestly I wasn’t very impressed. I guess I’m just old and I don’t want to go full electric. I currently have an outlander PHEV so half/half is about as far electric as I want to go. If I could get a half/half with about 100 miles in range and it still have interior like a regular truck or suv well that’s my dream.
I don’t really know what else to do other than just get my deposit back. Seems like a waste with the discounted price but what other options are there? I can still configure whatever I want but this is my current configuration. The delivery estimate currently says June.

Just cancel at this point unless you feel like gambling on buying and then selling it.

Should give it a chance. Yes, going full EV is an adjustment at the start, but once you figure it out, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I started with EV's 12 years ago and could never go back. The benefits far outweigh any small negatives. Should go rent one for a week or two, rather than just a quick test drive, then decide.

What you don't know won't hurt you, so I guess if you don't buy it, you won't know what you're missing, but I can say, you'll be missing out on a lot if you pass on the opportunity. Turo probably has some for rent. Would give it a try to take a little time to adjust to the new way. Most of us don't like change, but once we make the change, we realize how silly we were for resisting the change to begin with.

My dad was the same way. Took me two years to convince him to get a Tesla. Now, he won't give it up for anything. He just turned 80.

My two cents.

The R1T was the first electric vehicle I drove. Honestly, it took a little while to get used to one pedal driving, especially around Brooklyn and through Manhattan. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it my first drive. If I got an actual test drive of a demo vehicle, instead of driving the vehicle I already paid for, I may have felt the same way, reluctant to spend that much on something I didn’t immediately enjoy. But since getting it home, I’ve enjoyed it more and more every time I drive it. No regrets (especially with the early pricing).

But even with the early pricing, it’s still a lot of money for a vehicle, we all have different budgets and different things we want to spend our money on. If you really don’t like it, or weren’t impressed enough by it, I would cancel. No sense in trying to flip it for a few extra dollars, they aren’t selling for as high as they used to. As others have said, maybe try renting one for a couple days, or try another test drive at some point. Also keep in mind what current vehicle prices are if you planning on buying something else soon.

Just a question, did you actually go into Brooklyn to pick your R1T up? Was home delivery an option for you? Just wondering how I would "get" mine if I decide to still keep my order. Thank you.

Yes, I drove into Brooklyn via PA Turnpike, NJ Turnpike, Holland Tunnel, across Manhattan, Williamsburg Bridge, and back. I think I left my house around 7 am, and made it home around 1 pm, a little over 2 hours there, closer to 3 hours home, and a little over an hour on site. When I got the notice my R1T was ready for pick up, if I remember right, it said I could pick up later that week, on Thursday or Friday. I didn't select anything, and then the next day picking a Saturday appointment was available, so I picked early Saturday to best avoid traffic. I do not know if home delivery would have been an option if I pressed it with my guide, she never offered, I never asked. I figured a trip in on early Saturday could work (for me a weekday was out given traffic+distance). I did see some people on here or reddit saying they got home delivery in eastern Pennsylvania with a week or two of my pick up, maybe if I asked I could have gotten it, maybe that would have delayed delivery by one or more weeks though. I thought I've read about them meeting customers half way in random parking lots in NJ. And I have also read where they say home delivery isn't an option if its near the end of the quarter, possibly home delivery appointments are already booked up.

Was it the drive (of the R1S) that left you unimpressed or the idea of going EV? If it's the former, you may want to hold on to your reservation and try to delay it into the future (as much as you can) and see if there are improvements that make it better.

Second this, my first drive was my truck on the day it was delivered. Aesthetically speaking I loved the truck. That first drive or two was “odd” and nerve wracking and I was a little nervous about what I just bought and getting worried. Since then I love the truck and seem to like it even more every day. It’s been 3 weeks. Good luck with whatever you decide.

My opinion is that if you don't want it, you should either cancel or resell. Given what you say above, I think that means cancel.

I am actually picking up on Saturday. Have test drove the T and the S. I do think the T drives a bit better but loved the S (coming from a CRV!).

It is a lot to spend on a car so why do it if you don't really like it at least or have something driving you to buy it or both? For me, I want a three row SUV that is electric. When you look at the numbers, it is like 10k more than a nice highlander hybrid at the old price, so it is a no brainer. Yes, I will deal with range anxiety and rivian working through range issue.

I would not resell. The market will still be high for the S for a bit (months?) but it is just a hassle. Most buying this have enough money that the few thousand won't ultimately make a big difference in their lives. Money is important but weigh it against time etc.

Good luck!

Your aren’t being very specific about what you weren’t impressed with. Is it range? Is it the ride?

The range of both Rivians has been a known data point for some time now. So if that is the case and you knew that all along what was it you were hoping to learn by waiting and driving it? The charging infrastructure in this country is a pain and will be for some time. There are, however many people here who have driven their Rivians on very long road trips and had no complaints. It does take extra work though. Going full electric will be an adventure just like anything else so new would be.

If you were only disappointed in the ride or other things that can and will be improved upon with software updates I would recommend taking delivery and waiting. Don’t forget Rivian can solve a bunch of problems with those updates. Recently they added a snow mode that made a huge difference for many. If you drive it for a few months and don’t like you will be able to sell it.

Only you know if going full electric with a brand new company is an adventure you are willing to go on. But you obviously were interested enough to put down a deposit and wait this long already. Would be a shame to not give it a chance IMHO.

Try to get more test drives and make up your mind. Sounds like you had limited time behind the wheel. All the best.

I felt the same way and here's my proof: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/first-mile-unsure.6955/

After my first mile, I was pretty sure I was going to cancel.
After my second mile, I felt like ok it wasn't as bad as I thought and decided to hold my reservation.

One month later my Ford F-150 Lightning got delivered and it reset my emotions again.
It took a third mile before I convinced myself to take delivery.

Now that I have the truck I can say I like the truck, the updates are impressive. Rivian is listening and updating, making meaningful updates that actually impact the way it drives and feels. The different wheel combinations change the way the vehicle drives as well, so be sure to try it to see if you like any of them better.

That said, my original impression has never really gone away. Some of it has faded (Like the drive more than I thought), some stayed the same (still not impressed with the interior), and I gained some additional appreciation for things I didn't think I cared about (sound system, gear tunnel, Alexa)

I would say, give it another try or two before you decide and try to drive at different SCs.

They default to try to get you to go to Brooklyn. Just tell them how long it would take for you to get there and ask nicely for home delivery. You may have to be a little more flexible on the day and time but they accommodated it for me.
