This will be the first vehicle (since i was a kid at least) I am keeping outside... Does anyone have any experience with car covers or thoughts on using them? Will they scratch the paint if I try to keep clean?

They cause more damage than they prevent. rain/wind basically turns them into sandpaper. Hand wash and keep it waxed (or ceramic, if you want to be trendy).

Semi-related: Anyone know what kind of insulation the Rivian wiring is using? Hopefully not something that rodents find tasty, as I suspect that repair bill would be significantly higher than on an ICE vehicle.

The HV system will cook the rodents better though.

What happens when a tree rat spontaneously combusts? Can't be good for the vehicle...

The cure can definitely be worse than the disease.

My experience has been that all covers are not created equal and that there are situations, conditions and proper handling that could make a cover a good idea.

Despite knowing the potential pitfalls, I'm still interested in evaluating a quality R1T cover to bridge up to us building a carport. In our case, nature's detritus (pollen, spores, pods, needles, leaves, birds... you get it) on uncovered vehicle can build up quickly in every crevice and then that may scratch and leave impressions in the paint if left for even short amounts of time. Covers, judiciously applied to our two other cars, have saved a bunch of that build-up and saved me from re-clean/wash after just standing (not even driving) in the rain and wind.
