I've seen a lot of posts about chains and socks - but I curious about specifically driving on ICE.
I live in Vancouver BC, we don't really get 'snow' we get ICE. When the snow falls, most of the time it's right at the freezing temp - so what we actually get is a thin layer of ICE on the road. And our roads are not flat.
A good snow tire does better on this ICE layer - but you are still sliding around. I have the 20"AT - so I'm not worried about driving in the snow. But ICE...
We just had less than an inch of snow, but it coated the highway in ice - even at craw speeds in snow mode the R1S was sliding sideways when stopping.
The only thing I found in the past that works on this kind of ICE is Chains (but the fancy ones).
I'm looking at SZ468 Super Z-8 - this is what I had on my Yukon, and I was able to drive in ice storms that had tow trucks and police in the ditch.
I know with the 20" socks are recommended - but how are they on sheet ice? (The advantage of the chains, they even broke up the ice for others)
and I see thing things now that just strap around the tire through the rim. Some are metal, some are like a big zap strap.
Just looking for those who have experience with these things on ICE (doesn't have to be on Rivian).
(and I don't want to start any wars - but I also find for ice driving, I put the chains on the front tires. The rear gives you stopping control, the fronts give you stopping and direction. I'm not sure why things always say the REAR tires. Even Rivian with the new display show they put more power and breaking at lower speeds in the front tires)
