Comparing R2 Assistant & Autonomy

I am very new to software driven driving so please forgive my ignorance.

My 2015 Subaru Outback does have Eyesight (driver assistance), but that is separate from the infotainment system with its voice commands and is very limited in what “autonomy” it provides (lane drift warning, adjusting cruise control, and automatic braking in certain situations). The infotainment systems voice command. assistance is also very limited. So much so that we stopped using it.

For me, I think voice commands and autonomy could be critical in my next buying decision, so…

Has anyone found a good analysis and comparison of Rivian R2’s Assistant and Autonomy+ against that which is available in the BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60?

I recognize it may be a little early for Rivian Assistant specifically for the R2. But, I’ve seen European reviews of the BMW, which say that its voice command capability is superior to Volvo’s Google AI (& MB). And in Thunder Volt Auto’s review of Assistant (i.e., the R1 with the latest Assistant comparing it to Tesla’s MY), they ranked the latest version Assistant as superior to Tesla’s. How does Assistant compare to BMW’s and to Volvo’s Google Gemini implementation?

In contrast, Tesla’s FSD seems to me to be touted as clearly the gold standard for autonomy. But, the Europeans (IMHO) use that as an excuse for not providing an actual and rational ranking of the BMW iX3’s & Volvo EX60’s autonomy capabilities. Is Autonomy+ already better than BMW’s and Volvo?

What updates in these software driving aids of Rivian R2, BMW iX3, & Volvo EX60 should I be tracking?

Crashes and Fatalities while using these systems.

The best system will always be the system with the most crashes while using it.

Why? Because people use it all the time and learn to trust it where it then takes that moment as an opportunity to crash.

In that regard Tesla FSD is absolutely the gold standard. No one does crashing better.

Now if you don't want to do the whole crashing thing then the BMW and Rivian options are probably more up your alley.

BMW probably has the edge for now as they have self parking features.

Rivian is still doing a game of catch up. But, the best part of Rivians system is that its free with the R2 Launch edition.

Doesn't look like its that much.

The Driver Assistance Package is $2500
The Parking Assistance Package is $750

The Rivian Launch edition is nice as those are free.

I laughed when I read the term “parking assistance” b/c my 2015 eGolf uses that term for its beepers and lines that sound & display whenever you put it in reverse or move it out of park. Nothing automated other than sounds, turning on the back view camera (when putting it in reverse), and displaying lines (on the camera view or a blank infotainment screen, showing how close objects are to your bumper sensors).

Umm.. That's all Park Assist is in a Rivian as well...

So is Rivian’s current park assist (R1’s and R2) is a 2015 VW tech equivalent.

…alas, our 2013 Ford Escape did automated parallel park the car.

…when is Rivian expected to be able to automatically self-park?

BTW:
- I recently watched a Tesla FSD 14 video where the car could not get out of the tight parallel parking spot it was in on the streets of Chicago.
- And, I have seen more than one FSD 14. Or FSD 14 free video where the car is confused about where to park within a parking garage.
- And, one very pro Tesla video blogger admitted that he expects the first 2% and last 2% of any point-to-point drive will likely require some sort of manual “nudges” or other driver input for some time to come.

Are the voice commands and queries for Rivian Assistant as good as BMW’s?

when is Rivian expected to be able to automatically self-park?

The Autonomy page says Auto Park is coming in 2026.

I suspect this is the kind of parking where it steers for you but you still have to be in the car to take over.

What I really want though is driverless parking. Even if it's just "roll forward/backward" commands from the app, I want to be able to squeeze into or out of a tight spot without having to climb through the trunk (especially useful when you park perfectly and some jerk pulls right up against your driver door).
