Confirmed: nav. fails on stacked highways

This morning I confirmed what I had suspected: the nav. sometimes thinks I’m traveling on the express lanes below me, even though there is no possible way, from the path history, that this could be the case. This was evident when it rerouted me to an exit that doesn’t exist on the highway I was on. If I hadn’t been paying attention, I would have lost 20 minutes.

Unfortunately this is every nav I have ever used. I don’t know if they can consider path history to determine current road. One reason is if there are roads that can be connected through a detour then it would have to reroute you in the new path you are currently on.

I think Google navigation can use my altitude to disambiguate. Or, at least, I haven’t had the opportunity to notice this issue. I agree that detours make this harder. One alternative is simply to assume you’re on the original path if there’s any ambiguity due to a multi-level road. But the best solution is rock solid GPS, combined with a Kalman filter and accurate elevation data for all roads, I think.

I lived in NYC for a few years and quickly discovered there is no OEM or nav app that doesn’t struggle with those stacked highways.

I for sure still see this issue in the LA area on some of the stacked freeways
