Dropped by Ontario Service Center the other day. I have had my R1T on order for over 3 years. Estimated delivery time is Feb-Mar. After seeing the R1T beside the R1S I am thinking to change over to the R1S. I have a 2018 Ford F-150 that I will be keeping so I thought I don’t need two trucks. It looks like Rivian is honoring the initial price. The R1T will be about 5K more. Just wondering how long may be waiting if I change my confirmation.

Which form factor fits best with your planned uses?

The R1T is fantastic for road trips with plenty of storage for cargo not inside the cab. It’s great for bicycles in the bed.

The R1S better if you want to car camp inside the vehicle, have more than 5 occupants, and want more cargo storage enclosed inside the cab.

Your truck is 8ish years old. What will you do when it is too old to keep?

Quad motor R1T: not a long wait

Quad motor R1S: long wait

Dual Motor R1S: wait times in between of Quad motor R1T and Quad motor R1S.

There a lot of R1S’ in the shop. If you get shop access, you can have an R1S in 1-4 weeks if you find something you like.

I got an R1S 6 days after confirming from the shop.

I wonder if Canada has access to the shop with R1S inventory or only R1T inventory.

It will be interesting to see what happens when a pre-price hike truck order in Canada switches to SUV.

I would request shop access for sure and try to snag something from there if you want it sooner rather than later.

That worked well for me when I wanted to take delivery during kids summer break instead of when school starts.

I would actually say more than 2 occupants - my wife and I both found the rear seats in the R1T to be less than ideal (very upright and not adjustable) and the smaller rear door opening awkward.

For us, though, the primary factor was the ability to carry full sized dogs in conditioned space behind the 2nd row. After two years there still isn't a camper shell for the R1T (a large percentage of trucks in the PNW have these) and there's no way to condition the space.

Resale for R1S is better than R1T because more people would buy an electric SUV. R1S seems more desirable now, but I think once roads are flooded with them the R1T will stand out more. I personally like the R1T because the visibility while driving is excellent. Looking through rear view glass is easy. R1S is a big 3 row suv it’ll drive like that too. If I came to that choice right now I might lean towards the R1S for interior practicality and fitting in our garage. But the T has some cool features.

I think is all depends on how you plan to use it vs. other vehicles in your garage. I came from an Audi Q7 about six months ago when I got the R1T - and just had a Q7 as a rental while the R1T was in for some work. I have had the SUV form-factor for about 20 years and wanted a change.

I agree that the rear seat in the R1T is pretty upright and that's not a concern for me as I've sat back there exactly one time. Since it sounds like you have larger dogs, have you thought about putting them in the back seat of the R1T with one of those seat liners? I have some friends with a Lab in an F150 Lightening and this works well for them.

Just some random musings on this rainy Saturday morning...

One other random thought - the R1S does not have a full size spare (I did finally get the compact spare), or more importantly a place to put it. So...if you really want to do any significant off-roading you're going to have to take that into account. You can probably come up with a hitch mount for the spare (and deal with obscuring the camera, having to relocate the license plate, etc) or maybe you can lash it in the rear cargo area - but IMHO this particular issue makes the R1S not really suitable for off-roading. So that's why I kept my (lifted, modified) GX470.

There are a ton of Quad Motor R1S in the R1S shop, so its not a long wait for that. Dual motor R1S is the longest wait right now if you want the large battery instead of max pack.

True but to get shop access takes time for your turn to come up.

Even then in the past only trucks would show up first until they finally got access to the full inventory when their SUV turn came up.

That's the equation you need to answer for yourself.

I had originally configured a R1T, and later switched to a R1S.

I have no need for the 11k towing
I would also want to get a topper, which so far, none are on the market.
The GMC I have, I would use the pickup bed about once, maybe twice a year.

At the end of the day, the value/need for the T didnt make sense. Plus I have 2 kids, and in the future, they will have friends, or a baseball/football game to go to, and will need space for gear.

If I need to move something big, I have a good sized enclosed trailer.

Plus, if I feel the need to go drive for Uber/Lyft, the S gets you into the BlackTie program, the T does not.

That's the equation you need to answer for yourself.
For the DIY person who occasionally needs to carry a 1/2 sheet of plywood up to a few full sheets, the R1S seems like a decent solution. I was very happy to discover that a 1/2 sheet fits in the back of an R1S without lowering the 2nd row and with the back closed.

With full sheets I imagine that the 2nd row folded, tailgate down/open, liftgate secured down/closed, and rear of plywood strapped to prevent sliding out would be fine.
