Will Rivian, CarMax, carmigo, etc do a courtesy trade-in. Sales tax in La is 10% and offset by a trade-in. I know selling directly to Rivian will offset the sales tax but if I get a higher offer elsewhere will it be possible to have Rivian facilitate the trade?

Contact your DMV and see if they have some sort of vehicle tax rebate form. Here in Delaware, the DMV allows you to either trade-in or sell to another 3rd party before or after the purchase of a new vehicle, and receive a rebate for the difference in sales tax (Delaware calls it a document fee).

I get that for the consumer. But why would Rivian be interested in facilitating this when they stand to gain nothing?
Purely customer service. Local dealers do it when they have nothing to gain other than hopefully selling an extended warranty on a used vehicle.

I don’t see Rivian doing this. Obfuscating a trade for the purpose of helping a customer lower their tax liability? I wouldn’t want that on my books.

Pretty much every dealer does it, that's why it's called a "courtesy" trade.

Most dealers have used car lots. Rivian does not.

Maybe not but they do accept trades.

Do you know what a courtesy trade is? The dealership isn't keeping the car, they are facilitating the sale to somebody else so that you can get tax credit on the vehicle you are buying from them. They aren't doing anything other than paperwork

Technically that’s all Rivian does…. Their “trades” go straight to auction. But their offers are usually pretty bad/low. Even losing out on the sales tax offset, I was better off (by thousands of dollars) selling to CarMax.
