Cox Auto: 0 R2 Sales in Q2 2026

Cox Automotive has posted the Q2 2026 EV vehicle sales report. This report lists sales figures broken out by Make AND Model, unlike the Rivian numbers that only report total production and deliveries. According to Cox, Rivian sold 11,405 total vehicles in Q2 2026: 4,003 EDV, 6,183 R1S and 1,219 R1T. Crickets for R2. Of note, Rivian reported delivering 12,194 vehicles in Q2 and the historical delta between Cox and Rivian numbers is usually only a few 10s of vehicles, or less. That could indicate Q2 R2 sales of around 750.

On the plus side the R1S sales represent the best quarter since Q4 2024 excluding the Q3 2025 quarter with expiration of the tax credit. This puts a bit of cold water on the idea of R2 robbing sales from R1S. R1T sales continue to be dismal.

Other interesting insights:
-- Toyota/Subaru EV twins have more than doubled vs Q2 2025. Together they are now the 3rd best selling EVs (behind T and GM, replacing Hyun/Kia) in the US. If the Subaru set is getting onboard with EVs this could be good news for R2 as I see Subaru as the brand Rivian most emulates, much more that BMW or Volvo.
-- VW group EVs sales are tanking. As Rivian's joint venture partner this could be a big red flag.

Well, Cox is clearly wrong, since we have multiple confirmed deliveries in Q2…

They didn't say 0 sales of R2.
R2 just wasn't included in the report at all.
That could be because of their methodology - maybe it was introduced too late in the quarter. Hard to say without any text that describes how the numbers were collected.
I'm sure it will show up in the Q3 statistics.

One interesting thing I see is that the Rivian EDV outsells all the others combined (Chevrolet Brightdrop, Ford E-Transit, Mercedes E-Sprinter, Ram ProMaster EV).
