Since some folks are not quite understanding my point, for which I blame myself, let's take this down to a season one Brady Bunch episode. Don't pick this apart too much, it won't hold up, but stick with me.. Rivian LLC is Mr. Brady ("dad"), Rivian Financial is the new Mrs. Brady ("mom"), and I'm James Greg ("me").

Me - Hey, Dad, I like that cool toy you've got, I want one.
Dad - Sure thing, Tiger. Tell ya what - you can just pay me $10 now, and $1 per month, and you can play with it for 2 whole years, but only for one hour a day.
Me - That sounds like a good deal. With all my new sisters, the dog, and stuff, I probably won't have time for more than one hour for day, and I get bored easily, so 2 years seems pretty good.
(I ride my bike to the bank to get the $10)
-------------
Me - Dad, here's my $10
Dad - Son, with our new household, and with you living in the attic (Alabama), you need to talk to your mom
(I go see mom)
-------------
Me - Hey, Mom, Dad told me he'd loan me the cool toy he's got if I give him $10 today, and then $1 month, for like 2 whole years! He told me to talk to you about what to do with the money.
Mom - Hey, son. Just give the money to me. I'll take care of it.
Me - Ok!
(I hand the money to mom and go see dad)
-------------
Me - Ok, Dad. Mom's got the money. Let me use the toy!
Dad - Oh, no, son. You shouldn't have given the money to your mom. You should have to given it to me.
Me - But you told me go talk to her. I did what you and mom said. Can't you just go ask her for it? You guys are married, ya know.
Dad - Nope. We don't have that kind of relationship. Tell you what, you give me $10 now, I'll give you the toy to use, and then you can go talk to your mom and get her to give you your original $10 back.
(I walk away from the deal and have the bank take the money back from mom)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow - what a fuster-cluck. My delivery was scheduled for tomorrow. On Monday, I went to the Rivian portal to get the mailing address for the certified check I needed to send to Rivian, but the "to do" list changed to only asking me for the tracking number. No mailing address was visible there. No problem, I thought, I started a support chat (because my Guide has been useless), and was VERY clear that I was asking about where to send the certified check so that I could take delivery later this week.

They very nicely told me to call Rivian Financial Services. I called them. The greeting was from "Rivian Financial Services" (yeah, I know it's Chase), and I explained what I was after, being careful with my wording that this was the payment before delivery, not a simple/nromal lease payment. They even aknowledged it because my lease wasn't yet showing in the system. I was provided with a mailing address in Lousiana. The address didn't surprise me as I am in Alabama, and that's a decent-sized Chase facility.

Long story short - that was NOT the right address. Now Rivian wants me to send them another check (or wire) for another several thousand dollars, and do a stop payment on the certified check I already sent. It takes 90 days to do a stop payment on a certified check. That's the only option they are giving me. They refuse to talk to RFS/Chase directly. I have tried talking to RFS/Chase directly, and have no hope of them being able to locate my check and send it back to me. I am off to the local bank to start the stop payment process.

I have cancelled my order with Rivian.

ACH/Wire seems the best, most reliable way to send funds to Rivian.

Should probably just make sure you're not doing business with Chase in the future. Good luck with that by the way.

No. They truly don't care.

And I had my L2 Charger installed this morning. More money and time down the tubes. At least I bought the Tesla Universal, so it will work with whatever other brand I might get.

Sorry you had this experience, but I can't remember the last time I mailed a check to anyone.... lots of ways to fund payments that don't require mailing checks that offer protection from things like this happening.

Sure - just wire a few grand, with no real traceability (or give Rivian direct access to your checking account) with darn little way of recovering it when there's a problem. At least I can 100% ensure I get that check money back. Can you imagine asking Rivian to refund your ACH payment and how much run around you'd get? Hahahahaha.

What were the circumstances that made yours "not a typical lease payment"?

This was the initial payment for the car (lease buydown, taxes, registration, etc). The lease had not started.

Seems to me like you overreacted. I really don't understand the circumstances where they told to you send a check in but didn't provide an address. The whole process you're describing does not agree with what I went through. Personally, I thought the instructions for sending the down payment were quite clear and explicit. I chose to wire the money to arrive the day before my delivery. If you had done that you would have your vehicle today and would be very happy. Or if you had stuck with it and resolved the situation you would be getting your vehicle soon and would be very happy. But now that you've canceled your order all you're going to get out of the process is problems for the next few months trying to get your check back. And no vehicle either.

Not trusting a wire transfer is a bit paranoid IMO - it's much safer and more traceable than a check, also cheaper and more reliable than a certified check and overnight mailing of that check (I once had a large check burned up in a traffic accident involving a FedEx truck, and it took about 2 months for them to sort through the debris and return my partial check to me ... but meanwhile that really put me in a bad position with the person expecting that check ...) Also, mailing a check means you're out the money sooner than if you wired it.

I see no upside to using a check, and the downside is clear in this situation.
