Simple answer is, No, you didn't make a mistake. Buy what you want and not what Rivian is peddling you into buying so they can pad their quarterly numbers. Especially considering what you are paying.

And if you want to test drive one then wait for test drives to be available so you can make an informed decision.

Unless you want to have the latest shiny new toy every is having then go for it too. :D

Given that you have kids, I am sure they would prefer the comforts of space in the back. You are unlikely to have buyers remorse either way but remember, the passengers in the back tend to be vocal about their creature comforts. I have not sat in either so I am just guessing that the R1S second row is going to offer a bit more recline and perhaps space than what you get in the R1T - but this is pure speculation.
My kids were quite happy with the comfort of the back seat in the R1T, even with 3 across.

For me, the pick-up bed is the reason I'm interested. Electric SUVs are getting to be somewhat common. Sure the R1S is the most off road capable and is pretty cool, but fundamentally you're not getting too much you can't get elsewhere. The R1T at this point is one of 2 (maybe soon 3) options for an EV truck. The other two are full sized. The R1T also has the gear tunnel and camp kitchen. It's just more unique, but also happens to fit my needs (carrying my family of 4, camping gear, scuba gear, surfboards, and bikes, and going off road). Bonus points for being fun to drive.

Thanks for all of the replies. I will try to share my extended thoughts tomorrow, but I tested positive for Covid and feel like S***.
I guess I have the time to think over my options since I can’t go back to class for a few days.

Rivian is not pushing him. They are correctly saying his slot has come up and if he wants an R1T then he can proceed. If he procrastinated or changes to the R1S then delivery will be delayed and “his” R1T will go to another customer. It makes no difference to the Q2 number of vehicles produced or delivered.
