Happen to me twice, Driving on I -5 in the self driving mode, heavy fog on time, hard rain both screens black out. I went to right lane, in control of vehicle. Still had head lights. Screens rebooted on it own. Called Service, they had me reboot. 13,000 miles on RT1.

My R1S has almost 7,500 miles on it, and I received it in October. About three weeks after I got it the info screens turned off one day. Rivian support walked me through the reboot. Now it happens all the time to me. Three days ago they reset themselves six times while I was driving, which was unnerving because I was on Hwy17 in Santa Cruz county during a heavy rain storm. It's also happened in the dark on Hwy 80 and at other times--enough to be scary. Yesterday they did five resets on a 90 mile drive.
Rivian Support says they have never heard of this problem. I have an appointment for someone to look at in in April Wondering if it's only my car? Or do other people experience this? It's generally when the car has been running for an hour or longer.
I have an update. After making and submitting several videos of the screen blacking out; I received a priority appointment at my Rivian Service Center. It turns out that the Entertainment Management Module (EMM) was defective. They replaced it and the car is running fine now. I'm a happy driver once again!

Hello,
I wanted to share my experience in hopes it helps others. On 5/2/24 all three of my screens went dark. I panicked and did a soft reset using the two outer buttons on the steering wheel. It didn't seem like that worked so I put it in reverse and the truck drove. Shortly after getting on the road the screens came back on.
Long story short, over the next 5 days the screens went black again 3 times, with soft and hard resets not fixing the problem. The screens periodically came back on randomly when I'd check on the truck. Numerous calls with Rivian on 5/7/24 left me with an appointment at the Chicago service center on 5/13/24. I clearly explained I was driving the truck with Google Maps open on my phone so I knew how fast I was going. I clearly stated this is a safety issue. I was told Rivian could tow my truck to Chicago and get me a rental car but if it ended up not being under warranty, I would be on the hook for around $1k worth of towing and rentals. For all I knew, it would be towed down there, the screens would be back on, they'd tell me nothing is wrong, and I owe them $1k. I passed and said I would make the 2 hour drive on my own.
On 5/8/24 I got a call in the morning from a knowledgeable service center representative named Talha. He said he wanted to analyze some data and asked when this started. Once I repeated everything I had already told numerous Rivian call center reps, he stopped me immediately and said, wait ALL your screens are black?! Me: Yes!! Why hasn't this all been logged in my account already?! He said the vehicle must be towed to Chicago immediately and all costs will be on Rivian. Finally someone listened to me!
They added $150 to my Uber account to get to Enterprise rental (I used $20 of it) and sent a tow truck to my house on 5/10/24. I got a call that afternoon from Kevin at the Chicago service center and he said they had my truck and that he did a soft reset and the screens came back on. I almost lost it. I insisted something is wrong and they will go black again. This was my exact fear of agreeing to the original tow offer.
Fast forward, by 5/15/24 I finally got a call with good news. They found the problem and repaired my truck. Kevin said they needed to replace the Autonomy eXperience Module (AXM). I picked the truck up yesterday and everything seems to be operating normally.

Here is what the warranty service invoice says:
Concern:
- Customer states both infotainment screens are black. Customer states: Alexa is no longer
working. Customer states: Collision alert is not working. Customer states: Cruise control does
not work. Customer states: Lane guidance is not working. Timestamp: 5/2/2024
Cause:
- Autonomy eXperience Module experienced severe overheat due to air pocket in cooling
system. Removed and replaced AXM, performed necessary updates and calibrations. Vehicle is
now operating as designed.
Correction/Remedy:
- General Interior Trim Other Labor (1 Hour)
- Low Voltage Electrical General Diagnostic
- Module, Driver Assistance/Audio/Display (Remove and Replace)
- Driver Assistance Control Modules General Diagnostic
Parts:
MODULE - ECU; ADAS/CCDE; AXM
Part# PT00001493-P
Quantity: Price:
1 $0.00

I hope this helps anyone freaking out with black screens.

I am having the same issue with my truck, it’s going in for service in a couple of days. Do you happen to know where this module is located on the vehicle? I’m picky as to them prying apart panels and damaging them. I’d like to make sure no damage was done after it’s swapped out.

Hey BBS, I'm a very particular person and asked questions when this took place. I've been screwed by dealerships on past vehicles and have learned to take plenty of photos before dropping a vehicle off. The Rivian mechanic told me it's located below the center console. I can confirm that because they forgot a pick tool in between my driver's seat and the center console. My truck has been fine since. I know it's stressful, but you should be all good once they fix it. Part of the adventure is what I kept telling myself. Love my truck! Good luck.

Hey, wondering how many miles you were at when this happened? This just happened to me and the service center wants to charge me around $3500+ to replace that AXM module. I'm just barely out of warranty but I feel like this is a major safety feature for the screens to no function, therefore Rivian needs to step up here and either address what is causing this Module to fail and preform a campaign to fix across the board.

It's a major safety concern for the brakes of a car to fail as well, but there is no reasonable expectation for an OEM to fix it for free out of warranty. The failed AXM isn't very common, so it's not going to get to the point of a recall. It sucks, but it it what it is.

I was only one month into ownership... Sorry that doesn't help your situation. Wishing you luck
