I'm based in NYC but I noticed that there seem to be roughly the same number of vehicle available in the R1T shop even if you input, say, a Bay Area zipcode.

Out of curiosity, is that just a coincidence or are the same vehicles showing up? Seems like their 1-6 week delivery time could encompass shipping from one side of the country to the other.

it's probably showing what's in-stock locally, and in-production.
i ordered a R1T based on what the shop showed a week or so ago.
just got the message stating that "has just left the manufacturing facility", and is en-route.

Speculation:

My impression is that one's seeing locally available vehicles plus others (either in production or still in Normal) that haven't yet been assigned to another Service Center.

When Rivian does its end-of-quarter pullback from the Shop, all one sees is what's locally available. When that happened on Sept. 23, the number of vehicles visible to me dropped from well more than 300 to just 17. My assumption is that the 17 were either in Portland or on their way here already. On Oct. 2 (the first weekday of the new quarter), hundreds reappeared in the shop and I was able to select the vehicle I'd been eyeing a week earlier.

Speculation here but it seems to me that most of them are probably still at the factory. We got our R1S from the shop back in June and when I confirmed it at the very beginning of June it took three weeks before I was able to take delivery.

What would make sense in my mind is that if they have a vehicle that was already in transit and the customer canceled that would probably be local. But if they have additional production that is not been matched to a buyer then I would think they would keep that at the factory, put it in the shop and then once a customer confirms ship it. Or maybe they have regional holding facilities?
