I have a R1T LE. Got 35,000 miles out of my original Pieelli’s. I was easily averaging 2.75 for this summer. Just got brand new Continental TerrainContact H/T XL for my 22” factory rims. Did my first long trip yesterday of 275 miles and I was surprised by my lower range. Does anyone know if this is normal? Do the tires need to ‘break in’? Perhaps they just don’t get the range of the Pirelli’s?

In conserve mode with 95% highway I arrived back home at 7% from starting at 100%. I have done that same trip in the past and had almost 20% battery left.

I know, it could be environmental, weather, wind, all that. But that is a big difference.

although, the new tires are much quieter than my old. But my old were pretty much bald at the end.

any insights would be appreciated. Thx!!

The conti's are a heavier tire, so naturally you will see a hit in efficiency from that, but it shouldn't be that drastic. I would expect your average to go down to around 2.5kw/mi with that tire, but maybe someone with that exact tire can chime in.

When I did the research I couldn’t find where it would go down by that much. Maybe it was just an odd day and it was all environmental.

i have a multi-day 800 mile trip coming up in September. That will be the ultimate test i guess

Environmental differences can cause much greater efficiency differences than you might expect.

One thing that's often overlooked too, it's actually much more efficient to drive in situations where there is a lot of traffic, especially at higher speeds. All of the other cars are pushing the air around you into the same direction you are traveling. Crosswinds are the worst situation here, since it's constantly re-introducing new air into the equation.

for any given tire, you should also expect that new, full tread depth tires are going to be slightly less efficient than a heavily worn tire.

I 2nd environmental impacts; recent road trip saw us take a 5% drop on the return, even with a net decline compared to a net incline on first half, all thanks to tail winds turning into head and side winds.

Also, new tires need like 1k mile break-in period. Yes, they weigh more, but they're also much stickier and resistant.

Was your "2.75 for the summer" 95% highway? That would be a record for a Rivian unless it's at 45mph the whole way. I think you'll see your efficiency increase with a couple more summer months of mixed driving over several thousand miles, but I agree with the post about new larger, heavier tires.

nope. That is what I usually get in the summer. As long as I drive easy and slow. I try not to go more than 5 mph over the limit and never accelerate hard.
We’ll, almost never
I will wait and see how it changes with a few thousand miles of wear.
I have 5 tires too, rotate the spare one out every 5,000 miles so that will screw it all up again. Ha

thx all!!!

I just rotated my tires at the 7500 mile recommendation and my efficiency dropped to what they were brand new. Looks like our tires need breaking in.
