Axios:

If Ford CEO Jim Farley could go back in time, he would have moved much quicker to fix the automaker's quality problems, he told investors yesterday.
  • "I think we all have regrets and that's a big one for me," he said. "So it's a humbling thing. ... It needed a much more fundamental reset than I had realized."
Why it matters: Ford forfeited billions of dollars in profit over the last few years because of soaring warranty claims and delayed product launches due to manufacturing troubles, Axios' Joann Muller writes from Detroit.
Farley's regret, delivered at a Wolfe Research investor conference, was a rare mea culpa for any CEO — much less the head of a storied industrial icon like Ford.
  • "To be very precise," Farley said, "three years ago was the first year we had ... record recalls in the U.S. I had just become the CEO. And I looked at the performance management of the middle and entry managers — supply chain, manufacturing and engineering. And 91% of them had a 100% or more on their cash bonus. OK? So, now, it's not the case. You have to set up a culture shift, a performance rewards system."
? Zoom in: Farley — who's been Ford's CEO for three years — said he wished he had the same "laser focus" on transforming the company's industrial system as he did on restructuring its money-losing overseas businesses.
  • "The capability atrophied in engineering, supply chain and manufacturing at Ford," Farley said, adding that he talks about it "every day" with CFO John Lawler.

I am not surprised by this. The people in my circle with the most amount of problems are all Ford owners.

Ford has been.. And will likely remain... The most recalled auto manufacture in American history.

Although GM is trying hard to take that crown for some reason.

Then when they do issue recalls, they do find ways of weaseling out of doing the recalls (first hand knowledge of this).

When they say "quality is job #1" they dont mean it literally.

My favorite car I ever owned was a 83 Lincoln Continental...
The worst car I ever owned was a Ford.. A couple of them.

I will never buy a Ford again.

Saying you regret not focusing on fixing quality issues sooner is a big deal for any current CEO.

Actually fixing them, is MUCH harder. Requires new approach to engineering and design, as well as employee relations and operational models. It aint easy, especially for a company the size and breadth of Ford.
