People tend to buy what they can afford. If a Chinese company like BYD can deliver a decent quality, cheap car (assume it will be small) then that's fine with me. Not sure why people care so much about where a car is made. I'm old enough to remember import quotas, etc being placed on Japanese cars. Didn't stop Honda & Toyota from being wildly successful companies. They succeeded because their cost/value proposition was better.

Japan and China are totally different places. Japan is a democracy when they were importing cars into the US in the 70s. China has been well known to bug all their electronics to spy on the US. Big difference.

Tesla doesn't currently make anything I want to buy. I think that is true for many, many people. So it is unlikely they will be the sole U.S. based BEV maker. Don't get me wrong, their products are a great fit for some people. Just not me. One day they might make something I want. Maybe.

The Chinese competition is more worrisome, but there is a lot I hate about what they are making, and I will personally never buy a CCP infected vehicle. If the approach taken by the current administration is continued for years, China will have a very hard time competing in our market. And our market is huge, with lots of room for competitors besides Tesla.
True for me too even before Musk showed his true colors, but I didn't say or imply anyone would be the sole EV builder. I do think 50%+ in the future being Tesla + CCP is easily possible if our legacy mfrs keep failing to compete in this sector.

Given that we could both afford an R1 probably means that we can afford to bypass CCP vehicle, but for most Americans an auto purchase is too large of a household cost that they can afford to pay a 50-100% premium to avoid CCP.
I don't use tictok and don't allow my teenage son to install it, but we're a small minority on that issue and I worry Americans will show similar restraint in adopting CCP software vehicles.

Exactly. Japan is an ally, the CCP is our enemy.

Our government will hopefully maintain serious tariffs on Chinese products until they become a trading partner we can actually trust. As of now, a $30k CCP BEV should cost $60k+ here. Or they should be banned. I don't care which. China has stolen our intellectual property for decades and we need to cut them off totally.

I’m not sure if people believe Ford is giving up on EVs entirely. I think it’s just a general disappointment in these legacy companies that have the resources and history to change the future of transportation, yet they don’t have the courage or motivation to do it. They are following, not leading. That is why I was attracted to Rivian in the first place. Having the audacity to change the path we were on…

Ford will screw this next gen EV up too. They have not shown any sign of change other than saying this is coming and it’s new. I will believe it when I see it.
That can be said for most legacy companies regardless of industry. There are so many entrenched people in large legacy organisations whose primary focus is self preservation. They are the biggest obstacles to disruptive progress. A new company doesn't have that burden.

Obviously it is a matter of opinion, but my father was an engineer for OMC (made Johnson & Evinrude boat motors and Lawn Boy mowers). They filed patent papers on a new motor and Honda copied it and sold it in their 125cc motorcycles before OMC could get their boat motor to market. Dad thought it said as much about OMC as it did Honda, but it doesn't change the fact they didn't honor all kinds of intellectual property laws in the 70s & 80s.
Not going to argue it. You buy whatever vehicle you want & I'll do the same.

Sure that fine. It sucks to steal intellectual property. It’s a whole other world to put spyware in electronics for your government. That’s the big difference between Japan and china.
