The problem is that when towing those deep charges are coming every 90-130 miles when chargers aren't frequently available. I'm getting average 1.3 mi/kWh with an open car hauler, but can still be as bad as 1 mi/kWh. I have no problem stopping every 100 miles...I just don't want to be sitting for 45-60 minutes every time I do it. Unladen I've been happy enough with charging and range. This weekend I did a long drive that required a DCFC stop to make it home. It took 42 minutes to charge from 10% to 82% on a Tesla SC. That is at the time limit for me. Still acceptable, but it would have been nice to have that take 30 minutes instead.
I can definitely see how painful a 90%+ charge would be on a trip. I would plan a sit-down, full-service meal for those (lunch or dinner). That often isn't possible, of course.
