I could not disagree more. I use the gear tunnel practically every day. Tennis bag, ski poles, gym equipment, my disc golf bag & discs, any trip to the grocery store. I even put my pizza 🍕 in there for the drive home.

When I was working from home 3 days a week, I’d put my laptop in there the days I went into the office (now I just keep it at work…silent protest after they yanked our Work From Home last month…).

Furthermore, it’s the first thing I show someone when they ask me about my truck.
To be clear, my point is more that the loss of backseat functionality isn't worth the extra space the GT gets from the odd shape. Basically everything you named would also fit into a much smaller opening that would accommodate a fully rectangular rear door.

The only thing I've seen mentioned so far that wouldn't really fit is a golf bag, and that's kind of my point. The odd shape was a poor design choice and it has real impacts on how passengers get into the rear seat.

Honestly as it is the odd trapezoidal shape really limits what you can actually store in it.
Tell that to all the gear tunnel slide makers...

I used mine for all sorts of stuff before getting a slide, but it was messy. Now that I have some split bins, it's THE BEST. I would either have a bunch of stuff on the rear floor or backseat and frunk instead of the GT. Instead my frunk has a water tank, fridge, grocery/dry goods stores, and my back seat stays clean/clear when the Dougle isn't in there.

Sounds like maybe you should have gotten a R1S, not a R1T.

I like the gear tunnel as it. And because I'm an old retired guy, seldom, if ever do I have passengers in the rear seat. I usually don't have a passenger in the front seat. Maybe that says too much about me personality wise?

My wife doesn't really like riding in my R1T, so if she's going we usually take the ID4. It has a more comfortable ride, in her opinion. I'm fine the the truck ride. It's good to have options.

Bad take, I need the Jim Rome song in the background.. One of the main reasons I love my truck. Use it everyday amd reason I kept R1T over CT.

The gear tunnel is the main thing I miss switching from the T to the S. I used to keep all my rock climbing stuff in there now I have to take it out between gym sessions or my truck will get smelly.

Bad response. The fact that you use yours every day changes literally nothing from the point I was making.

In OP's extremely limited defense, I think he meant if you sacrificed part of the GT to be smaller and more like a vertical rectangle (think skinny spice rack) then you couldn't put golf clubs or larger things in there. But you'd then have a larger ingress/egress for rear passengers.

Here is OP's modified Gear Tunnel, great for storing... Not much.

Huh wuut? You said make it smaller. That would be pointless.

Where we can agree is about 3 inch longer wheel base would have been better. However would defeat Rivians offroad approach to vehicles.

Yeah, if it were any narrower, my bag wouldn’t fit:

I use my gear tunnel ALL THE TIME. It's one of my favorite features and one thing I'll miss the most when I eventually trade into another vehicle.

I have the Rivian Duffle bag that is shaped like the gear tunnel. I keep spare warm clothes and blankets in there. Sometimes I put rations in there as well. In Colorado, it's best to be prepared for extreme situations both on the road and off road. I also store my traction boards there, some tools, my rifle, and camera gear. It's also a quick access point for putting items I just picked up at the store.

Seriously, the storage capacity in the R1T is one of its biggest selling points.
