Fully agree with leaving the infotainment to the experts but this would hardly be the reason why. As noted, it’s already a feature.

Why? The Rivian map supports this already.
Is the rest of the Rivian navigation as good as Google’s? Before this change people could say that Google’s address search, navigation and real time traffic may be better but Rivian’s nav is aware of chargers so for an EV Rivian is better than Google. Now that Google is starting to improve features needed by EV drivers, I think it’s safe to say that the days of Rivian’s nav doing anything better than Google’s are numbered.

Tesla got away with not supporting screen projection for years because they had little real competition on the vehicle side. Rivian doesn’t have that luxury so they’ll have to be competitive in infotainment.

The main things I would like to see is better POI handling, and being able to label my own POIs. You can put arbitrary polar coordinates into the Rivian map system, but when you favorite them, it saves it as the city/locality name without the ability to change it at all.

It would also be nice to be able to send POIs or routes from a different mapping program or even the Rivian app on my phone. Even my Harley Livewire has a really basic way of sending navigation steps to the bike from the phone app. It's a cludge, but it works. I definitely wouldn't want to be playing with my phone while riding the bike down the road.

When we travel in a vehicle that has native Google Maps(or I suppose Android Auto support), I save all of the destinations ahead of time into favorites, and it's just a matter of two or three clicks to navigate to them.

Sorry, I fat-fingered the post you were quoting so I didn’t have the whole thing visible at first.

I don’t blame Rivian for trying it on their own, but they probably are aware of the lessons learned by the other big automakers over the past decade or so. People like to use their own apps in their vehicles.

While I understand Rivian wanting to follow the Tesla model, almost every other car maker has chosen to support Carply or Android or both. There is a reason for that, people like it. They can use whatever music app they want, they have native calendar integration with their navigation system, they get audible text reading and replying, the list goes on. Rivian should of just said 'let's be like VW/BMW/MB/Ford and give them all three options'

As far as I can see, this update only allows you to search for DC chargers (filter by speed) using Google maps. Google maps will not do EV route planning between charging stops a la ABRP or the Rivian nav computer. When they do, that will be really interesting for the ev community, otherwise this isn’t very significant news.
