Guard those windshields!

I dropped my truck off at the service center today to have a few items taken care of, and the Rivian service advisor cautiously said, “you picked up rock in your windshield. Did that happen today?”. I calmly asked them to add the windshield replacement to the list.

He was correct when he noted that I was in the best possible place to have discovered the issue. The sore spot is that I asked for windshield protection film when I had the PPF and quartz put on the truck - the film was backordered. I guess this first windshield will have to go after only 2.5 months!

I also just took a very small rock to the windshield and now have to get it replaced. But my appointment isn’t for another 3 weeks. Surprised about how easily a small rock cracked the windshield. and I recently got the windows done with Xpel, including the windshield. seem to think I’ve taken rocks in the past on other vehicles without any cracks resulting.
what do folks think of the quality of the Rivian glass?

I got hit by a small rock. It caused more damage and the crack spread more quickly than I would have expected. Does the xpel (and others) really help?

Seems like they may be pretty cheap glass. Adding too much higher insurance rates. Looks like they don't star out but just send a big crack. Rivian not a good place to use cheap materials.

Known issue with truck. Very fragile glass.

Had a star shaped crack after my first road trip and don't even remember hitting anything.

Are folks experiencing an immediate crack, or does it start with a chip that spreads within a day? I bought a chip repair kit that I'm keeping with the truck at all times hoping that I'll be quick enough to beat the spread.

Last week I took what sounded like the hardest hit I have ever taken to a windshield, and I have replaced or repaired several on prior vehicles. It sounded like it hit in front of the rear view mirror, and I fully expected to see at least a chip or crack when I stopped to check. Nothing. Guess I got lucky this time.

After reading some of those other threads about the windshield and roof glass I finally watched the Netflix doc about Fuyao and let’s just say it did not inspire confidence. YMMV.

Same here I definitely took one extremely hard and nothing... in my model x in the first 50k miles I had to replace 3 windshields and each time I had tinted it for $600... after the last time I said screw it in not tinting anymore and I now have 220k miles and not 1 rock chip lol.

I really hope this doesn't happen on this truck but so far so good but front windshield tint is so much cheaper on this truck

I also watched that a few months ago when the "roof glass" controversy was happening. It expected it to end on a happy note but didn't. I wish Rivian would offer some sort of Gorilla Glass option like the Jeep Wrangler does. Fuyao doesn't seem like a very good company.

Agreed. Given all the advancements in manufacturing and materials it sure seems like we should be at a point already where this should not be an issue on any vehicle. A couple years ago I got a huge chip/crack in my windshield literally the day after I had it replaced. Ridiculous

I had a similar experience. Heard a loud smack right on the glass. Didn't see a smudge after. I was very concerned though by the way it sounded.

Total noob question here but can we not get a windshield from a different glass company?

I have not yet seen anyone who was able to do that. Should be an option eventually.
