The only theory I have so far is the new owner left his phone or fob in the truck.

That’s what I assumed as well. The description of the chase doesn’t exactly scream “brilliant hacker” to me :CWL:

Not stolen, but I parked my truck at a hotel near SeaTac airport for 2 weeks (they offer long-term parking). When I returned, I saw that someone had gone through my truck and scattered papers etc. and taken a set of keys that had my work keys and house keys (yes, stupid to leave these in the truck). Since my business cards were also in the truck and the registration w/my home address, I had to change locks at both my home and my business.

I initially could not figure out how this could happen but then realized that the right rear door had not completely shut when I walked away from the truck, therefore not allowing it to lock. To make matters worse, I had the truck serviced the week before and they left it in Service Mode so the gear guard cameras weren't working. All my bad, since i should have checked both gear guard and doors. I had become complacent that the truck would lock when it lost contact w/my phone, as it always does.

So painful lesson learned but somewhat feel lucky that the truck was not otherwise damaged or stolen.
This is why I always leave all my old guns and knives in the car. If someone decides to break in and take my car or even worse, come to my home, they can expect to be met with the rest of my collection.

not even sure its possible to steal. it needs the phone, key fob/card/wristband to start. itd have to be some high tech thieves.

It's possible.. look up "relay attack", but those are pros not kids, or local addicts looking for a ride.
