Long time lurker, first time poster. This community is awesome.

Got my 2025 dual motor R1S recently. I noticed that there is this hissing noise when I approach the car with my phone key. This only happens after the car has been parked for a while and I approach the car with the phone key. It goes on for about 2 minutes and then stops.

It happens every time I approach with the phone key. Otherwise, no warnings or issues.

Is this normal? What’s happening?

That’s pretty loud! Typically the waking up of systems is more of a knocking and clanging sound for me, on both Rivian and Tesla. Never heard anything like this. Would think maybe the suspension, but my compressor doesn’t sound like this either.

Could be the garage and sensitive recording device making it sound louder than it is. That said take note of how each corner sits after being parked for a while to rule out it doesn’t have a leaky airbag.

Mine does that but it’s definitely not that loud, I think the garage is amplifying it. We keep ours parked outside, i did notice it though, but again this sounds way louder than mine, again because I thinks it’s parked in a garage with the door closed.

This is a gen 2. What is the ambient temperature in your garage? Could it be the HVAC?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Love this community. I took measurements of the suspension height so will see tomorrow morning if there’s a noticeable change to make sure the suspension isn’t leaking air. I’ll also check the noise when it’s parked outside; I agree the garage might amplify the noise. I don’t think it’s the AC or the heat pump as the former is noticeably louder by comparison. I’m not familiar with the heat pump though. It’s 90F so it shouldn’t be a factor but I’m not sure if that’s used for something else. Will keep folks posted.

Aside from this issue (which is potentially a non-issue), the make quality has surpassed my expectations. No paint issues, no significant panel gaps or other issues on delivery. Overall purchase/delivery experience was good. I’m in Orange County and took delivery at the Costa Mesa SC. There’re some minor issues that I suspect are software-related and that I’m collecting to have service investigate in one go. This includes the center console not opening, drive cam not finding my SSD (happened multiple times) and sound not working completely. The first two were fixed with a soft reset and the last resolved itself after a sleep cycle.

Overall, based on one day of experience, the R1S is still the best car I’ve had. I’ll share some more thoughts in a few weeks.

Probably set to auto height or kneel and the vent muffler is somehow disconnected on his car. Couldn't possiblity post an even shorter video, lol?

I don’t have it in kneel but do have the auto height setting enabled on all purpose drive mode. sorry about the short video. Lol. I had one that was 2.5 min long but it wouldn’t post.

what is the vent muffler and should it be reconnected?

When the vehicle wakes up, if the AC was previously on, it will turn on at startup so at 90F the AC would come on. Turn off the AC, let it sleep, and see if the sound is different when it wakes.

When the suspension lowers, it needs to vent the excess air. There is a muffler to quiet the sound of the escaping air. There have been one or two reports of a loud hissing sound whiler lowering the suspension, and the repair report was that the muffler was not properly connected. I don't know exactly where this is located on the vehicle.

Update:

I heard back from the service center after they reviewed the video. They confirmed that this is normal for Peregrine (Gen 2) vehicles and that they've observed similarly in other cars. They mentioned that it's the vehicle waking up and primarily the suspension adjusting/readying itself for the drive. I also shared another video of the sound with the car parked outside and folks are right that the garage significantly amplifies the sound. They weren't super specific on what's happening and I suspect their response was based on some other more knowledgeable expert saying this is normal and found in other Gen 2 cars. Still, between that and the responses on this thread, I'm satisfied with the answer so will just monitor and see.

Lastly, I took suspension height measurements at some arbitrary fixed points and they were the same in the morning. So i don’t think there’s a leak there.

Thanks for the feedback all!

The only sound I've noticed (recently) is a slight "knocking" sound coming from the suspension (hard to say if front or rear) as it comes out of "kneel mode" when driving (first minute or so). I was worried so I disabled kneel mode and will keep an "ear" on it. Anyone else had this??

Lots of adjustment noises, @Kidentist.

Vehicles that don't adjust while moving don't have those noises.

It took us a while to get used to these noises.

Very best wishes!
