I swear, all of my gremlins pop up at the touchless car wash. First the tailgate latch, then the Service Suspension Soon, and now the hood latch. This popped up during my carwash.

Immediate problem: driving home over 13mph. Luckily I limped to Costco and tried a sleep reset. When I got back in the truck and left, it was gone, but popped up later on my drive. Thankfully it asked me before slamming the brakes.

But just to be sure...

So this looks like an improvement over prior issues. I haven't manually opened it yet, been trying all sorts of other diagnostics. The 12V service didn't pop up until leaving Costco, so I'm not sure how connected it is. That looks fine, bouncing between 14.35 and 13.5, recharging from HV just fine. Low Voltage Maintenance Status is reading 1, which I assume is good?

I also had an unusual front hood issue right after the 2024.19 update. Not sure if there may be any relation.

About an hour after the update completed I drove about half a mile to the local grocery store. Shortly after entering the parking lot, I receive a “Hood latch not working. Pull over immediately and get vehicle serviced” pop-up, and the vehicle entered turtle mode at 13mph max. Luckily it was mostly downhill on the way home.

There was no response to any method of control (outside button, phone, key fob, or main screen). The graphics seemed to show the vehicle didn’t know if the hood was opened or closed.

Infotainment and hard resets did not have any impact. I removed the T20/T25 screws, pulled the release cord and looked inside the frunk, and no items were near the latch or impeding the hood operation. I could manually close it and it did latch.

The mobile service visit was today and the technician did some testing/troubleshooting which indicated the control unit wasn’t able to talk to the hood latch. We also noticed the front foot well lights were not on, as well as the center console light (right above the camp speaker) was also not working.

His laptop trouble shooting resource showed a control unit connector inside the center console, also a tech tip a mentioned the possibility of moisture or foreign debris that can cause problems with the connectors in that area.

As he was removing some trim pieces to access the connectors, he unplugged the center console light and the trouble indicator on the dash disappeared. He plugged it back in, and the pop-up warning and indicators came back on. He even went as far as removing the one from his R1T service vehicle and plugged it in ours, and it worked fine.

There appears to be some anomalies with the our bad light module. The PCB looks slightly bent, and there also appears to be some residue/corrosion. The current theories are: moisture somehow got into the light module, or some “magic smoke” leaked out of one of the components. We aren't sure if the update had any relation to the light failing. The “short” of it is the light was shorting the bus which prevented anything on that buss from talking to the control module.

In the meantime we left the light disconnected, and I drove it a few times with no issues. A replacement should arrive in a week or less.
None of my footwell lights are on, which makes me suspect something from the same ECU. As I dive down the device manual and trace ECUs, has anyone resolved a similar problem?

Update:
-not the frunk latch fuse
-not a bad light in the frunk, center console, or foot wells
-not a "loose" exterior sound connector; I plugged that back in and it worked fine, didn't clear errors, so back to silent mode 🙃

Anyone know anything else on this same line?

No hood latch problems today. Opens and closes fine, no error. Just got the service 12v battery system immediately error, but also no problems. VD is the same, no voltage drops. I tried Low Voltage Battery Service in RiDE and it doesn't clear.

Yeah sporadic electrical/computer issues are a pretty common sign of a 12v issue.

Or, a short somewhere, caused by bad ground or water intrusion where there shouldn't be any.

Rivian service manager and tech said solution is replace 12v batteries. They said hood latch, lights, basically any failures in 12v items that pop the battery icon error means the 12v batteries are starting to lose charge. Their default solution is replace batteries, and if it happens again, then chase gremlins.

They squeezed me in this morning at Seattle service and $780 later, I'm back on the road. I bit the bullet and paid since I've already have the batteries replaced for free once, and at 65k miles I'm due for mass l paying for regular maintenance items.

I'm going to get the fused 12v jumper for $35 in case this happens again and I can try replacing myself. Ohmmu batteries are $500 for the pair, might go that route next. Hindsight I should've tried disconnecting and reconnecting 12v to reset the system.
