The center threaded piece doesn't come out easily. I was able to get the wheel out without removing it, with the crossbars in place. Sit on the tailgate. lift the rear of the tire up and stick your feet into the cavity. Push your legs down and wiggle the wheel/tire up, then run it over your legs until it is clear of the center shaft. Easy after that as long as you can get yourself out.
