How many of you with an R1S are getting the Underbody Shield?

There seems to be some speculation that having it will bump your order. My Guide says that may or may not be true.

He also thinks there will be more R1S’ without it because it won’t be selling to the off-roading crowd.

I am torn as to whether I want it. I do t see myself doing any heavy off-roading, but the extra protection is nice, I suppose. And if it bumps me a bit in line… hmmm.

We are getting the off-road extended underbody shield because we do some rock crawling in fairly remote areas. If that wasn’t one of our uses I’d probably skip it since the standard shielding is supposed to be up to the task of protecting the high voltage battery.

It hasn't seemed to have any appreciable impact on R1T deliveries, so I wouldn't include or exclude it just to try to get a faster delivery. If you need it, get it. If you don't, don't.

Edit: I agree with @CommodoreAmiga who just beat me to it.

Don’t believe idle speculation IMO, no reason one way or the other would be delayed since they have been delivering R1Ts with and without for months.

I am sure a few sheets of metal attached to the bottom adds to their margins for $2k.

I am in the same boat. While I do think there is no doubt that the first R1S deliveries include the underbody shield, I am reluctant to change my configuration. The last thing I want is to wait until 2023 due to a rash decision now. So I am going to sit tight and hope that my window stays firm.

My info of ordering below but I have underbody (and everything I thought would be a go for first deliveries) and I've seen many comments from others who ordered before me without it have later dates. Many other reasons I am sure but I'm convinced enough to not touch my shield. Oct-dec window

Same boat, same reply from my guide. They don't know how it impacts delivery timing. My guess is they will soon make and deliver a bunch without it to test out the variance in their line for initial QC. I took it off to value engineer the cost a bit and I don't foresee myself doing any rock crawling anytime soon...but also wavering on whether I should change to get my vehicle sooner so the resale value on my current car doesn't drop with the market/depreciation.

I am debating getting the re-enforced underbody shielding considering all the reports of how poor their QC is with the standard underbody shielding and how it is secured.

Maybe this is how they get people to pay extra for the upgraded underbody shield. :CWL:

When I was looking at Rivian Vehicle Shop entries a month ago, it was about 50/50 split between "with shield" and without. We chose "with", because while I wasn't really planning on it, my wife was feeling paranoid, so why not?

That's why I ended up adding it... resale of the car I'm about to sell. That, and also having the new IRA detail as law knowing I'm good taking delivery in 2022 and being over $80k. $2k with the A/T's makes sense. But I was going to potentially lose the $7500 credit and the $2k. Not worth that.

I have thought about this a bunch. I would guess they produce at least some underbody shield first. But I am not getting the shield. I will be doing some offloading but most of that on soft sand so I don't see a benefit to it. If I am a little slower getting it, so be it.

I also changed back to OC, even if it means some delay, as they suggested it won't hold things up too much (the black version).

Who knows, though!

Great to see this thread; I was just on the verge of posing the same question. Like many here, I have an R1S with an Oct-Dec delivery (supposedly). My config is and has been LE LG FE w/ 20” AT but without underbody. And like many here I’m tempted to make a switch to add underbody with the only reason being that I’d like to get the truck sooner. I lack a guide, but it sounds like from you all that a guide wouldn’t really know either. And of course there’s also the risk that changing my configuration pushes the delivery date back. So perhaps it‘s best to just sit tight. Would be great to have guidance on this from Rivian itself . . .
