I never knew charging would be this slow above 80%

Now I know the more the battery is charged, the slower the charging rate will be, but I never realized actually how slow it would be to charge above 80%.

Today I stopped at a 350KW charging station from FPL. I wasn't planning on charging this early into the trip but we had to stop and it was going to be about an hour of time to kill.

If I didn't charge then I'd either have to stop and charge up or pray that the charger at the hotel I'm staying at works. Thankfully I charged up because of course the Clipper Creek charger at the hotel was throwing a fault.

It took three attempts to get the FPL charger to work. First time it said replace handle so I started over and then the second time it said out of order. Third time works like a charm.

It took about 30 minutes to go from 80% to 95% and then almost another 30 minutes to finish off the last 5%.

And......??? Is this your first EV? That's pretty much typical for any EV.

This is why you only really charge to 100% if the EV is sitting and not when you’re traveling with it. If you’re traveling then you run it deeper into the pack (lower SOC) and only charge up to roughly 80% at most. The Rivian specially gives a warning on the screen when you’re charging above 80% that the charging rate is slowed.

That's typical for an EV. Most people don't cause to 100% at DC fast chargers unless they cannot complete their trip any other way.

You will save time if you change you mindset and charge more frequently but for shorter amounts of time.

Try charging to 80% or perhaps a little higher. This will actually save you time in most trips... Even if you have to charge an extra time.

I believe that it’s far worse to let the battery sit at 100% and not drive it, vs charge to ~100% and go right away.

But yeah, trying to charge to near 100% at a public charger isn’t usually worth the time (or the cost if you’re paying by the minute).

Net-net I think it will take some time before we can empirically chart degradation and optimal charging level for Rivian’s particular brand of battery architecture & battery management.

Basically all EVs outside of a few exceptions like the E-tron charge very slow above 80%.

I know Mercedes, Lucid are getting some nice results, too, and the BMW aren't bad. Rivian is just behind in the charging game.

The Taycan that set the cross-America Cannonball record mostly charged from 3%-60% as their strategy for keeping record time, they stated they didn’t try to charge above 80% and mostly only to 60%.

There are some manufacturers that let you use less of the actual battery size. Thus, what you see as 100% is not really 100%. Some leave as much as a 5-10% buffer at the top. For those, they will appear to reflect better charging speeds at higher "shown" percentages. The car may show 90%, but could actually only be 80%. While all have at least some buffer built in, most EV's have much higher battery use. Can vary from car to car. But, probably in the 98 to 99% range. I should have said "most" indicating nearly all EV's. Rivian and Tesla let you use most of the battery available. Tesla's are very slow at the top as well. As are "most" other EV's. Sorry for any confusion.

I guess there could also be some that let you pack it in all the way to the top. But, that's been pretty widely known as not being a healthy approach for the long term life of the battery.
