Solar is not free either. but yes solar is the way to go once you recoup your installation/equipment cost, while utilities continue to increase in price.

Unfortunately break-even times can vary a LOT. There are many dependencies so it can be tough to calculate.

For a system I installed in 2014 (which was in addition to a system that was put on the house when it was built in 2013) my break-even time was 7 years. That time was enough to totally pay off the system (counting tax credit at installation, state generation credits, and net metering). The house and our cars were all entirely electric, and we had enough panels to be net-zero, so we had no bills for gasoline, natural gas, or electricity. That was nice (but unfortunately we have since moved).
