USAA has really ticked me off recently between a wind damage claim and this terrible Safelite glass experience, so I'm out. I'm shopping around and would like to know y'alls experience (positive and negative) with your current, or maybe a former you left, insurance provider. Specifically, I'm curious how windshield replacements have gone for folks since that's my current annoyance. Here's what I've found so far quoting identical coverage/deductibles on home and auto.

USAA: Cheap coverage, terrible customer service, terrible claims/Rivian glass replacement experiences

GEICO: 20% more for home/auto

Liberty Mutual: 50% more for combo

Statefarm: Over double just for auto!

Allstate: Homeowners was 30% higher, it wouldn't quote auto or bundle unless I "purchased" homeowners first, so left the page after that red flag

Progressive: Auto is 28% less! Home is 5% more, but includes more coverage and halving deductible. This is the clear front-runner.

I've been with USAA for 20 years for auto and home insurance. I just purchased my Rivian in March.

Would you mind elaborating on what has been terrible with customer service and claims? Has it all been Rivian specific? Have you had issues with coverage on other vehicles with USAA? Just curious for what I might be in for...

I've had them 15 years, but never really had major claims until recently. It's not just Rivian specific, last year I had roof/ceiling damage on a wind claim that went awfully. I get that their job is to not pay claims, but it's a real kick in the teeth when your estimate is $40 over deductible and you deposit that pizza money into my account then jack up rates $200/year the next month. That whole claim was a fight I inevitably surrendered, which contributes to my distain for them.

Most of my Rivian claim trouble comes from going through Safelite, who doesn't have a location in my area to recalibrate cameras and really jacked up the installation.
1. Reaching a human with USAA took 10 minutes jumping around bull crap automations
2. When I said it was glass, they transferred me to a Safelite line without asking questions
3. Safelite tried booking me at the same place who jacked up the first and didn't do anything to fix on a warranty appointment, then the place they did book me cancelled on me, and called after the appointment time to say they don't do Rivians
4. Calling USAA another day, another 10 minutes mashing buttons for a human, when I finally got one their system hung up on me.

When I replaced my windshield the first couple times, Safelite didn't do Rivian yet, so they were fine paying out after I submitted an invoice. Now that Safelite does them, USAA says to go through them first and they have to authorize a Rivian SC replacement.

My major question that NO ONE would answer, USAA or Safelite, is if Safelite can't recalibrate the cameras and I need to go to SC for it, is that a new claim or against the same claim and my deductible is only paid the once? They refuse to answer, and just bounce me around on calls and faulty appointments.

I've had Geico for 8 years now and have been mostly happy with them. Had 1 minor fender bender in 2019 in my Ram and that went pretty well. Had to replace my R1T windshield last year, and after having to call them and tell them a few times Safelite couldn't do a Rivian yet, I was told that I could then go anywhere and was able to use the local Rivian certified shop to the tune of $2700 and get reimbursed.

However when the side window of my Bronco was mysteriously shattered, they forced me to use Safelite, who jerked me around, waited until the day of my appt to tell me they don't have the glass and can't get it for weeks. Ended up using a local place who replaced it in 2 days with OEM glass for cheaper than Safelite, but Geico still wouldn't reimburse all of it because the labor was over $45/hr.

So all of that to say, not sure if thats really much better of an experience.

But for me, I can't get anyone to match the coverage I have for the price, Geico is definitely the cheapest for what I get, homeowners is through Travelers though, and have never had to use it.

Allstate works best for me but I have a combined home and auto policy which makes a big difference with discounts.

I’ve used Allstate for a roofing claim of $20,000 and also for my Rivian factory windshield which was covered by OEM replacement at the service center ($1839 - $100 deductible).

No issues at all with both claims. The Rivian claim, I had to pay upfront to Rivian direct at the service center and Allstate was very quick to reimburse me.

No glass policy in my state so I keep my comprehensive down to $100.

They give you money off your deductible for good driving so right now I get $400 off my $1000 collision deductible.

No GPS or any sort of driving tracking devices.

I shopped around and used brokers and no one could come close even within a $1,000.

My home policy has jumped up at a much higher rate than my car policies.

Here is a broker quote for auto after they ran it through 30 companies to find the best possible options.

Combined Allstate auto (3 vehicles but 1 has suspended coverage / only comprehensive) and home policies still ends up working out best for me at this time.

I drive around 15,000 - 17,000 miles per year on average If I am working from my office.

Here is the Allstate quote on my Rivian. I think it was $1,039 for the most recent 6 month renewal.

This is the trends I noticed in pricing from the day I got my launch edition to today.

$733 when I first got coverage in June 2023 and my mileage / usage was much lower.

$895 on December 2023 renewal

$958 on June 2024 renewal

$998 during December 2024 renewal

$1,039 on June 2025 renewal.

My mileage was around 7,000 miles around 2023 and then slowly increased every year from there by 3,000 - 4,000 miles.

I also added Allstate's auto replacement program, also known as New Car Replacement coverage for the Rivian only.

Connect by amfam through costco was a great price for me. Less than $1000 per year for r1t in maryland.

$500 deductible and pretty basic coverage. No windhield, etc.

I just ran a quote with Amfam and they came out higher as well. Especially for home policy.

My Allstate auto Policy is $1,716 when paid in full every 6 months.

My Allstate home policy is $3,000 for the year when paid in full

What state are you in? I've been quoting about the same; difference is $500 collision deductible, no transportation, dropped replacement coverage last year, and no medical payments. Currently paying $1k/6 months for Rivian and 2024 RAV4.

I am in DFW, TX. Rates are going up here because of uninsured motorists and weather like hail plus inflation.

While I have State Farm and reasonable rates, I can't recommend them. A car backed into my R1T in a parking lot. They also had State Farm. I took my truck to a Rivian certified body shop. State Farm wouldn't pay for all of the repair, so I had to pay the difference. The body shop told me that they were having a difficult time getting State Farm to pay for repairs before I took my truck there.

The previous time at the same shop, Progressive was the insurer and they paid for the whole repair. The shop said that Progressive was good to work with.

From my vantage point, the gist of my comment is this: nothing, nobody out there beats Amica for insurance. Full stop. Not just in prices but just as importantly in customer support, standing by you. Second to none.

Have had Amica forever. Handful of claims at most in so many years, Amica has never raised so much as a question about my claims. Free to have my vehicles or home repaired at a place of my choosing, by whomever; lightning-fast claim processing; claim adjusters very reasonable. Never any reneging, no fussing, no back-and-forth; very good settlements/payouts in a day or two. Has never jacked up my rates because of them, either. The related horror stories I hear from lesser insurance companies, an alien concept to me.

Here are the facts:
Last renewal in November 2024, carrying extremely high coverages for liability and uninsured, $1k deductible plus full glass coverage with NO deductible: 4 vehicles, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model Y, Rivian R1S, Toyota 4Runner: $2,385 every 6 months. Total insurance cost for my R1S: $715.

Keep in mind that the cost includes full glass coverage with no deductible. For me, it is a no-brainer: $74 for my Model S, $64 for my Model Y, $111 for my R1S.

I already had the windshield replaced on my Model Y. $1,600. Couple of photos sent to Amica; go for it; took it to Tesla; then to have windshield ceramic film reapplied; submitted receipts to Amica; full reimbursement to my bank account in two days. Can't beat that.

Had to insure my new home with State Farm; Amica would not insure it 😭. State Farm keeps trying to lure me in for auto and umbrella policies as well, but it just cannot beat Amica on price.

I switched to Progressive after 20+ years using USAA. My renewal with USAA came up after about 7 months of R1T ownership and they tried to almost double my rate with no accidents or tickets. I'm sure Progressive will attempt the same thing at some point since all insurance companies are trash, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it:asshat:

Thanks for Amica, I may split between Progressive for auto and Amica for home! They are like 23% less for home, but 30% more for auto. I can't opt out of PIP coverage, which I don't need with socialized medicine and all, but I do like that full glass coverage...

State Farm, besides being more expensive, actually does not have a separate glass coverage; glass repairs would fall under comprehensive coveage with a $1k deductible, plus very likely jacking up my rates right away should I file a claim. No way, no how, no, thanks.
