Obviously, I don't know the details of how they got to the decision but my suspicion is that CP/AA are non-starters because they take over everything. Rivian would basically be outsourcing the entire infotainment experience which we know is becoming one of the strongest parts of connecting with your customer. Not only would CP/AA never cater to the unique needs of Rivian, Rivian won't build any customer loyalty/delight. Whereas a browser, could be positioned as just one small part of the bigger "Rivian Experience".
I've debunked that multiple times, in the past, so I won't go into all the details again... But I'll just say that customers will use the option that gives them the best experience. If you're worried that customers won't use your OE navigation then that means you're not doing it as well as CarPlay.

Forcing people to use your system by eliminating options doesn't make your system better; it just means people don't have any other choice.

I never said it was but this is one of the most common business tactics in the tech industry. See most Apple decisions over the last 20yrs.

I'd disagree. They will use the option they are the most familiar with, even if it provides a substandard experience.

It doesn't have to "take over" the entire experience at all. It's all about the implementation by the manufacturer. Take the Mach-E, for example. It runs in a window within half of the screen, allowing the other half to manage the Ford side of the infotainment. Typically if you're playing music or on a call you can actively switch between the infotainment and CarPlay, and it continues to function seamlessly.

The (much) larger point is control over the infotainment revenue stream. It is no longer just an outsource world for most of the major manufacturers..
