It seems like all manufacturers have some sort of growing pains. From Porsche, and Audi all the way down.

The Kona (I have) suffered from battery issues in the early iterations and it seems like they have it sorted now albeit a much smaller car and battery.

I hope Ford gets it figured out
Hey!!! We are the kona klub.

Is the Lightning Forum full of people complaining about Ford and their communications and people threatening to cancel their orders?

Their up side is that when a pouch cell overheats due to defect or overcharge they just puff the pressure out the relief port vs. exploding/catching fire. They are considered some of the safest cells available.

it's a big truck consumption has to be high because of physics. Not sure what test cycle Ford used to get the EPA consumption numbers but they are proving to not translate to real world conditions. Most buyers don't understand the limitations of the tests and ratings so they buy a 300+ mile range and are seing the display read under 200 and are understandably angry.
There are a lot of problems with the 80A L2 charger that comes with the Lariat and Platinum trims ($1200 option on lower trims) as well. Compounding the problems is the fact that the dealers, near me at least, are clueless on how to service/ trouble shoot or even speak intelligently about the products they are selling. If you ask them about any aspect of the EV system not printed on the window sticker they just make up some info I know to be untrue instead of just saying they don't know. It makes me Realize that while RIvian needs to get much better at plenty of stuff they are doing much better than the legacy manufacturers in many ways.

Exactly, and it's not like the EPA makes them "prove your work"... Ford and the other manufacturers submit their numbers to the EPA and the EPA publishes them as gospel.

As almost any Tesla owner (including me) will tell you.. their range numbers are a bit "optimistic" too. So far, in my experience with EV's since 2012 the Volt and Bolt range numbers were easily obtainable 365/days and regularly surpassed during summer. The i3 numbers are pretty much dead on accurate except during the summer when it's easy to surpass them. In our Model Y and Model 3 it's really difficult to obtain the advertised numbers unless you really take it easy and it's summer conditions.

Seems Ford may have been a bit "optimistic" when advertising range numbers too.

Agreed. This has been more forgivable by many owners to date which tend to have an "early adopter" mindset. I could foresee this being contentious as we move into the mass adoption phase of EV buyers.

I'd guess this is why Rivian doesn't let the estimated range drop below EPA numbers, and explains why I've never seen mine change.

The Guess-O-Meter on my Dad's lightning (Extended range pack) reads 180 mile range on 100% charge in the morning with 22F temperature and the battery preconditioned to a scheduled departure time. He believes this is false advertising from Ford and is not happy. Probably unrelated to the issue they are having but something Ford should officially address as this seems to be a common situation.
Update on this. Yesterday his Lightning bricked while at a stop with a service light for the battery. It had to be towed to the dealer. once there they diagnosed to a bad battery "bank". This explains his dismal GOM range and consumption data. He has a Chevy silverado loaner till the lightning can be fixed. He is pushing for an entire new pack since it seems the bad module has been like that since he took delivery (based on the range he saw) and he feels the remaining modules may have been stressed causing premature degredation. will keep everyone updated.

Update on the update...
Last Manday 2/20/23 Ford notified Dad that his lightning would be receiving an entirely new battery pack assembly as part of a non safety related service initiative. It seems Ford is trying to be clear that these service initiative replacements are not related to the fire that occurred in the Lightning that was waiting for transport at the factory, who knows if this is accurate or not. They also claim that these "service initiative" pack replacements only affect apx. 100 owners. I get the sense based on their description of the affected vehicles and the number of owners posting on forums that Ford is drastically under reporting the quantity of affected vehicles. Stay tuned...
