magsafe charging speed using Rivian USBC

I've been trying to replace the internal wireless charger, with 3rd party printed plate, and magsafe pucks... I know plenty of people have done the same.

My situation is a bit unique as I have a samsung, with a metal ring, so that it can be used with magsafe products. This works perfectly with pretty much any magsafe charger. That said, I have found that when a magsafe charger is plugged into one of the USB-C ports in the car, it charges the phone slowly. Samsung phones tell you how fast they are charging (regular, fast, super-fast), and charging this way is always regular. Now if I plug the phone in to one of these ports, it will fast charge. Also, if I take the magsafe charger, and plug it into a sufficiently powered brick, or 12V adapter, it will also fast charge. I've tried this with about four different brands of magsafe chargers... all will fast charge when plugged into another power source... but when plugged into the Rivian's USB-C port, they will only regular charge.

For those with iphones... do iphones let you know how fast you are charging? Have those with iphones tested the magsafe speed when plugged into the rivian, vs when plugged into another power source?

I did see that thread. Which is part of the reason I was surprised that the ports aren't providing fast charging when a puck is plugged into them. If I plug the pucks into a 15W power adapter, they provide fast charging. So something's a miss. I'm guessing it has to do with QC2 vs QC3 vs PD... which I clearly don't fully understand.

MagSafe requires 9V to deliver 15W. I haven't tested the Rivian USB-C ports, but it's possible they may only give 5V and not 9V?

Just tested with my wife's Pixel 7 Pro... same thing. With magsafe puck plugged into the usb-c port, it only gets regular chargning. If I plug the magsafe into a brick or 12v cig adapter, I get rapid charging.

So if you are charging Android, don't expect fast wireless charging using magsafe plugged into usb-c. Would love to hear some speed tests from iphone users.

rwerksman (riviparts) posted the USB-C ports are 12V x 1.25A = 15A.

The Jsaux pucks say input 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A... maybe the 1.25A is causing it not to pass through fast charging wirelessly?

After more research, rwerksman confirmed that apple OEM and jsaux (and really any wireless magsafe charger) will negotiate down to only 7.5W when plugged into the the usb-c ports. Due to the fact that the power supplied is 12V x 1.25A.

The only way to get 15W fast charging is to tap into the power that is provided to the built in Qi. This requires a buck adapter to convert the power to USB, which can provide up to 30W x2 ports and give actual fast wireless charging.
