Have read many saying they can't move the truck if the door is open. Which is basically how the truck is programmed for safety reasons. Similar to the Tesla.

Even with the door closed, if you don't have a seatbelt on and slightly lift your butt off the seat to look behind you, it can throw it into park.

For anyone interested, in both scenarios, I learned with the Tesla, and it works in the Rivian as well, if you need to move a few feet, can ride the brake pedal and accelerate at the same time to by pass the safety feature. I just barely touch the brake, enough to turn on the brake lights, but not enough to really engage the brakes.

Certainly don't recommend driving around with your foot on the brake, but can come in handy when you need to move the truck a couple of feet and keep the door open to see, or for whatever other reason.

In the Rivian and/or Tesla, have used this technique simply to back out of the garage as well. Often necessary if I don't put my seatbelt on to back out of the garage to park it in the driveway.

I hope someone try driving R1S with the back open and report if it plays ball. If not, which sensors we need to fool?

I understand why you need to drive with the tailgate open. But why do people feel the need to drive with the driver side door open, no seat belt, and no butt in the seat?

Because it’s a “Truck”

heavy items to load or unload
Backing or Pulling into tight spaces
In the woods or outdoors with obstacles
Ect.. Ect…

And Some trips are measured in inches or feet. Do you really need to wear a seatbeltin this instance

Like he said. Often times to line up a trailer to the last 1/2 inch. Hop in. Move it back an inch, check it again. Or any other host of reasons. Not to literally drive around the block with the door open and no seatbelt. But to move it forward or back a foot or two when necessary. A paint to have to get all the way in, put a seatbelt on, close the door, etc, to move it an inch!

So what?

heavy items to load or unload
So load or unload your item. I don't see how closing your door is an unreasonable inconvenience -- or even relevant to the task of loading/unloading items, regardless of weight.

Backing or Pulling into tight spaces
Again, why does the door need to be open? If the space is that tight, wouldn't you need the door closed? Have you seen the sonar sensors? 360-degree camera views? The truck gives you a better view with the door closed than you'll get sticking your leg out while it's moving.

In the woods or outdoors with obstacles
Again, seriously? Is this a SERIOUS statement?

The truck actually drives without issue even if you don't wear your seatbelt. So I'm not sure why you're picking that as your complaint? It is unfounded.

Use your cameras. They work better than hopping in and out of the truck like it's 1964.

So what? Not sure if you are just Trolling or just being a dick. If you actually use your truck as a tool for work or off road I think that would clear your perspective. Or perhaps it's just a life experience or common sense thing. I was actually thinking your response caught you at a dull moment but maybe not.

For me, the door needs to be open occasionally as I work around construction equipment/sites/loading docks/ect. If you think you can trust the "Sonar or 360 degree camera views" I'd direct you back to my life experience comment, as perhaps you have the skill to trust the camera's down to the inch and I just don't [yet].

Same thing for closing the door as putting on the seatbelt. (1st. the seatbelt comment was in my mind a reference to the tesla comparison in another tread). I can't trust the sensors or cameras like apparently you can.

You’re insulting me… cute. From my perspective, you’re being dull for not being to wrap your head around not needing to drive with the doors open. perhaps a Jeep is more your speed?

Try using a (modern) forklift without putting full weight on the seat or buckling the seatbelt. It won’t move either.

Cameras don't always tell the whole story. Pulling into my garage, which is tight front to rear, per the camera, appears I've run through the wall in front, yet still have several inches to go. And sometimes, yes, If you want to move just a few inches, it's nice to be able to just put in drive and move that few inches without having to close everything up. Be it a car, truck or any other type of vehicle. Even with the Tesla, some superchargers, you had to get on top of the parking stop for the charger to reach. May times would fall just a hair short. Was handy to hop in and just back up that extra inch or two without having get all the way in, close the door, put a seatbelt on and do then do it all again. Can imagine the same being true for those camping too. Many, many, many scenarios where that extra couple of inches can make a difference.

Agreed the electronic nannies can be annoying, but the field of vision is much better in the forklift.

With the Defender cameras I can line up the hitch, park three inches from the wall, line up the tires going over the log bridge or the trail boulders or between the ruts…Rivian isn’t equivalent?

Well, guess it’s a race between my Rivian order’s fourth birthday and my LR EV’s birth date…

It is. The Rivian cameras are quite good from a functional perspective. They're not the "highest resolution" but they show plenty of detail to know where the truck is. Certainly more so than sticking your neck out of the open door.
