Make sure you keep your watch with you, and your backup phone with you as well. Such a stupid, asinine absurdity of an implementation. To rely on third-party devices. Truly sad.
The backup phone will be locked in the truck. And I never take my watch off, as you can tell by the pictures. 🤣

Bet you won't be 🤣 when and if they fail. However often or unlikely it may be is beside the point.
Only a devout, hopeless Rivian cultist fanboy can say that this abject stupidity of an implementation is a great thing.

2025 Rivian R1T - Large. Delivered on November 23, 2024.
Occupation
Retired
I worked in Information Technology for 36 years, retired after 21 years in cyber security. I have gotten used to MFA for everything I do online.

But the Rivian MFA is annoying. I had it on since the roll-out. I have a Motorola RAZR phone that is squirrely at best. The PaaK function is so... tedious. If the phone has not been near the R1T for any duration, the truck and phone do not know how to communicate, and the only way I can unlock the truck with the phone is to reboot the RAZR (2 minutes wasted). Then to get in and have the truck tell me to open the app to get it rolling with either tapping the in-app screen or entering a 6-digit pin. More time wasted.
My husband (uses Apple iOS) could not figure out what to do. Did not know that the app had to be opened before he could activate the R1T.

And THAT is the annoying part. We get pop-up notifications for everything that comes into devices and can assess the messages and address a lot of them without going into the apps, but not from the Rivian app (even with all notifications turned on). I wish that, once the truck is unlocked, I can put my phone away, not need to have it out.

Trying to determine a use case scenario that makes the added steps worthwhile. Perhaps if we lived in a high-crime area, on-street parking (we don't)? Maybe turn it on while on road trips? Sort of like letting Visa know we're traveling for when charges come in from an out of area vendor.

I've turned off MFA for now.

Well, fortunately this is an easy fix for Rivian and not something that we all have to live with forever. A simple FW push with an updated version of MFA is all it takes. IMO Rivian listens to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and responds, if it’s practical. Being a whiny bitch (not directed at anyone in particular) probably does nothing for anyone.

New owner here. Is there a reason Rivian released the multi-function drive? E.g. Rivians are getting stolen a lot. I agree it's a pain but if it's necessary....

Honestly I have yet to hear about a single example of a Rivian being stolen, so I don’t think it was a reaction to anything like that.

It is possible, though. The most most likely scenario is a relay attack, which is how some Teslas have been stolen. It takes some technical skill and often more than one person to pull it off…

I have been using MFA-D since it was released. Recently, I have had great luck using my Garmin watch to authorize the drive. The phone must be unlocked when responding on my watch, or it doesn't work. That makes sense because I have to unlock my phone as confirmation my watch is authorizing the drive.

Unfortunately, it does not work 100% of the time even if I unlock my phone. Sometimes I select it on my watch and it works perfectly. Sometimes it does not. It seems to be working about 90% of the time. If it does not work, I just open the Rivian app and select the button to drive. Easy. But this initial implementation needs some improvement, I think. It needs to work with my watch 100% of the time.

Also, sometimes MFA-D turns off. For no reason. It just reverts to normal mode. This has happened to me several times. This last time, I just left it off. I am at home anyway, and my local town is safe. Safer than the DC area, for sure. LOL.

My wife will never have the patience for this. Never.

Unnecessarily agressive?
C'mon. Many of us are not shackled by or oppressed by bullshit political correctness. We tell it like it is. And that is exactly the situation.

I am still using MFA-D and I am much less impressed than I was initially. Several times it has turned itself off. Just randomly. I get in the truck and it starts and drives with no MFA.

Last time it did that I just left it off. Multiple drives without MFA. Then yesterday MFA-D started working again. For about three drives. Now it is off again. WTF.

When working I can use my watch to start the truck. Not sure that is easier than using the phone because the phone does have to be unlocked for the watch authentication process to work.

I stopped using it but when I was I used my watch to start the vehicle and don’t recall requiring my phone be unlocked first. Maybe there’s a setting?

iPhone and Apple watch? It could be the way my Garmin watch connects to the phone.
