I was waiting at a red light, then proceeded straight after it turned green when a kid driving a black Acura blew through his red light. I tried to stop, but he hit the front of my R1T, bounced into a concrete highway divider, flipped, and took down a traffic light post. No airbags deployed in my car, two in the Acura. The kid was a little banged up and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but I think he’ll be fine. I’m fine, but sadly my beloved Rivian isn’t. The cameras automatically recorded it as an “Incident”.

I’m not looking forward to the insurance and repair process.

Geez. Glad everyone was OK. He was going damn fast. Let us all know what happens on the insurance side. It seems like they total these thinks pretty quick.

I just heard that my truck is totaled. Blueprinting after removing the fenders revealed the frame is tweaked beyond limits and needs to be replaced. Many suspension components are damaged, and the “Skateboard” which houses the battery is also compromised. Repairs would be over $90k. Now to negotiate a fair settlement with my insurance company. I really like my R1T and have placed a reservation and am ordering an exact replacement.

I'm thinking once the insurance companies realize how expensive Rivians are to repair we will all get whacked on the premiums!
It's already happening. Getting insurance on my Rivian that I'm taking delivery on Saturday has been a nightmare. Rivian insurance would not give me a quote because of my address in Denver - although I know others have it, so not sure if this is a recent change or specific to my address in Wash Park (which would be weird).

So I've been on the search for another insurer that offers at least newer car replacement - seems like a good investment with this car. My current insurer progressive will add it no problems and the rate is ok, but no newer car replacement.

Farmers declined coverage because they don't insure cars over 700 hp, Hartford also declined but I didn't call for the reason. The other quotes I got had a $7,500 range between the lowest quote and most expensive quote for a 6 month premium. I went with Allstate which was cheapest, but 72 hours later I still don't have insurance cards. They assure me it's bound and just processing since I paid the first month's premium - but no agents can actually see the policy at this point. Actually quoted AAA today, and looks like they came in a little cheaper with better coverage options - so I may switch to them.

Point being, definitely shop around and start the insurance process early. It could be an unexpected pain.

Interesting, I am an IL resident (northern suburbs Chicago), for now. I added my Rivian to my Farmers policy with no issues and at a reasonable rate.

Sounds like it must vary by state.

I'm so sick of dealing with banks and insurance companies atm - it's been a scramble since I wasn't expecting the R1S I picked out in the shop to be available immediately.

Financing is set, but still dealing with insurance is frustrating.

Great to hear both parties are ok & "OUCH" on the R1T. I've driven over a one million miles in my career as a Telephony Engineer & thanks to mandatory semester of "Driver Education Class" back in the late 70's at my Broward County, Fla Highschool I've been able to miss a lot of accidents in my lifetime & plan to drive another 250k in "Tarkus" my soon to be delivered R1S. Good luck with the Insurance Claim. The Acura Driver probably has no insurance (very sad) since it's only a misdemeanor moving violation these days (should be Federal & Arrestable offense)
