I don't know if this is helpful - but I figured I'd post my experience when ordering for those that don't know what to expect. I did some searching and found some old threads and the whole process may have changed, so this should be the latest example of what to expect.
I had been looking at an R1T for a while, but a few months ago it seemed the wait times were extremely long. Doing some googling last week, I read that there was a Rivian "shop" that could be faster, and after googling some more, I decided to put in my $1k deposit and see what popped up.
Short version:
July 4th, holiday, too much time on my hands, put down 1K and wait to see what happens. Receive "reservation is confirmed e-mail"
July 5 - Receive "It's time to begin the purchase process email" Checking my account on the Rivian page has link to Shop.
July 5 - AM - Check store and only a few R1T available, none with the options I would want. Log out.
July 5 - PM - Check after work and there's a whole bunch of new listings, two of which match exactly with what I would order. I pick one.
July 5 - Almost immediately after receive"Your R1T configuration has been updated e-mail"
July 5 - Later that night receive "Learn about trade ins, Financing..." email. I Log in to Rivian webpage and find "Steps" available and send in DL info, and request trade in quote.
July 6 - AM Log on to Rivian webpage - nothing new, but get text message from "guide" introducing himself and asking for photos of trade in. I upload those and go get my trade in quoted at some local dealers for comparison.
July 6 - PM I get a trade in offer and accept it (it was exactly half way between best and worst offer I got that day). Get a VIN assigned and I get a contract for signing on the website.
July 7 - Contract is signed - two steps left from my end: Insurance and payment. I text guide because I need to know more or less what date to eliminate trade in from insurance to start coverage on R1T. Crickets.
July 10 - Guide texts me that I can do the insurance once we are closer to a delivery date. Payment also on hold (from my side) until I have a better idea on delivery - don't really want to give them $$$ to keep indefinitely.
July 10-11 - Crickets. I text Guide to ask if he has any updates. He says the car is in the factory and they will reach out to me when it ships and then again when it arrives at SC (I assume they will reach out for balance of Payment when car ships, but it isn't clear). It doesn't seem like guides have a lot of information - for example, I found the contract up on the webpage before the guide texted me.
So - all in all this process (so far) has been extremely fast. I waited longer for my Tesla 3 back in 2018. However, Tesla was better at telling me what the schedule would be, so I knew when the car was to ship, when it would arrive and when I had to have all docs & Payment in order.
We'll see what happens next - I'll be away for work for the rest of the week, so I hope they don't need anything from me until I get back.
