I am planning a couple of trips this summer, one is Phoenix to South Lake Tahoe. I was originally going to use my Mach E on this trip, but since there are RAN chargers in addition to EA chargers, I will take my R1T. The R1T navigation wants to route me through Las Vegas and along a route that only has 50kw chargers. The route I plan on taking is I-10 over toward Riverside, then up US 395, there are plenty of fast charging options on that route.

I cannot find a way to manually insert a waypoint to get me on that route with the Rivian navigation system. Has anyone else figured out how to do this? It is easy with the Ford nav, I just insert a waypoint at an intermediate stop and it sorts out the new route all the charging stops for me. Ford also lets me enter a date, time and starting battery charge level for the trip, seems Rivian falls short on this also.

I have had same issue as I am on a trip from Mammoth Lakes to Lake Tahoe. For a few reasons I had to keep my journey within the state of California but the nav will try to push you the way it sees as ideal. There is no way (that I know of) to pick waypoints or alternate routes. It would be nice if you could pick certain stop (add a stop…ever hear of that) along a route. So I resorted to using google maps on my cel phone to get me to certain route connections and then the onboard nav would be forced to pickup my location.

TLDR Rivian NAV needs to allow for route selection and adding stops along a route.

At this time there are no "alt routes" options with the onboard nav. You just have to make discrete trips in place of waypoints. It's kind of a pain, but that's just how it is at this point of development.

There are also no options for "quickest route" or "shortest route" either (that I was able to find).

It's more work, but because I can't insert waypoints using the Rivian app or the R1 NAV planner I have been using www.abetterrouteplanner.com on my phone, ipad, or computer to plan my route. That way I can insert whatever waypoints I want, and completely customize my trip. After I get it the way I want it, I take a pic of the written list of stops where it shows the addresses, charging time, etc.

Afterwards, in the R1 I plan each leg individually using the addresses of the next point I want to visit from the pic. Doing it this way just makes it quicker planning each leg in the R1 NAV planner since its simply a matter of making a plan from my present location to the address of my next stop/waypoint/destination.

More work than being able to plan the whole thing including waypoints in the R1 NAV planner, but it is quicker than trying to plan each leg from scratch on the R1 NAV planner.
