I drive a 2025 R1S. The 12 volt battery was replaced last year when the service bulletin went out. I drive from Boston to Vermont regularly where 0 to 15 degree weather is a norm in Vermont. In the past 3 weeks, my R1S has failed to charge using level 2 chargers (in different places) where the battery was at 10% and 40%.

I called service this morning. They say it is a software issue and an update is forthcoming.

When I called service the week before, they told me it is a 12 volt battery failure.

This was not an issue last year. Is anybody experiencing this? Thoughts?

You should have gotten email and text messages about this issue to the stuff on your Rivian account. It's also been posted everywhere I know of.

Here in western Mass. (usually low 20's temps during the day, single digits overnite) I returned to a completely dead R1T after a daytime appointment. No 12v warnings at all, the thing just died and left the car undrivable. Roadside Assist had to get the car towed to the Hudson NH SC for a day to switch out the 12v. It is a cold weather issue, especially if you have Gear Guard and other features activated that pull from the 12v without the main battery pack warming it up first. No one at the SC said anything about an update fix.

Hi Freddy,

We’ve identified an issue that prevents certain R1 vehicles from AC charging at home or with Level 2 chargers when in colder weather. A permanent fix for this issue will be available next week in an upcoming OTA update.

To charge at home or on a Level 2 charger before receiving the update:
  1. Precondition your battery to at least 40°F (Energy app > Prepare for fast charging > Prepare battery).
    • To locate your vehicle’s battery temperature, go to Drive Modes then swipe left on the center display.
  2. Perform a vehicle reset (hold Left Thumb Control of the steering wheel and Hazard Lights button for 15 seconds)
  3. Plug in the charger.

If this doesn’t work, we recommend preconditioning your battery to a higher battery temperature and trying again.

DC fast charging is not affected, and you can find compatible fast chargers from your vehicle’s Center Display or in the Rivian app.
