Hello All,
I took my first test drive in a Rivian a couple of years ago and was bitten by the power and the features of a 2022 model at the time.
And,... I couldn't afford it then. So now I am looking at some used 2023 R1S models and am trying to figure out the best features for my usage.
I mostly tool around town locally to and from work 25 miles round trip. But I also would like to tow my 4000lb boat around as well.
Is there any way to check the features (specifically battery pack size) through entering the VIN #s? I am looking at two in particular. One adventure lists it has Quad motors, no battery size, and another lists as an Adventure but doesn't list whether it is quad or the battery pack.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Lots of info already available if you use forum search.

Easiest way to ID is to ask sellers to provide the “about” screen in vehicle settings. Center display, gear icon at bottom (swipe up from bottom if it isn’t there already), “about” is last item at left. This screen shows VIN and build info. Rivian made numerous rolling changes and the cutoff aren’t public knowledge. This makes decoding of VINs complicated. Though if you search on topic of decoding VIN, you’ll find info on that. If sellers are unable or unwilling to supply photo of “about” screen, scam alert, walk away.

Adventure is the only trim produced until gen2 refresh launch March of last year (as model year 25). So it’s an irrelevant stat. Up until November’22, quad-large was the only drive and battery configuration produced. At that juncture dual max (and a bit later standard and standard+ started, which were software locked NMC large pack until Rivian started producing standard packs with LFP cells).

Telltale distinction between quad and dual is color of brake calipers. All gen1 quad have yellow calipers.

You can also buy pre-owned direct from Rivian. Doing so could make ownership transfer process smoother. Be sure to use a referral code. 500 Gear Shop points for you and owner of code. https://rivian.com/configurations/l...PE=PRE_OWNED_VEHICLE&TRANSFER_FEE=ALL_MATCHES

You should be able to see the original build of the vehicle if you do a VIN search, although from my experience it won’t be very detailed. The NHTSA tool is probably the best one, actually:

For your described usage, I think even a dual motor would be ok, but I don’t know much about towing with a DM. Lots of members here can help you with advice on that. If you want ALL the HP you should be able to find a quad motor at a good price now…

Good luck and ask lots of questions - very knowledgeable folks here!

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for! I even called Rivian, before posting, and the person that answered didn't know of anything other than inquiring directly with the owner/dealer.

I appreciate the great idea to ask for the "about" screen info!
I did look at Rivian's site for used but they are all 2025 models and a little further from my price range. Also noticed that the R2s are smaller in price as well as smaller sized. I'm a photographer so I need to pack a lot of gear and need the cargo space for location shoots.

What zip code? Sure you had filter set to preowned? I'm seeing 30, all pre-MY25. Seeing the "about" screen is about as conclusive as it gets and you get to verify VIN. Bogus scam listings are not unheard of these days. Nationwide preowned results from rivianroamer: https://rivianroamer.com/inventory?...ar[]=2024&model_year[]=2023&model_year[]=2022

If you can swing lease payments on a new Dune edition R1S, as business expense, there are still some left and Rivian is supposedly motivated to move them.
