Agreed - once I got used to it in my Tesla, I had to remember to turn off and lock all our ICE cars because I would get out and leave them running or get in and sit down and wonder why they weren't on. I left my Prius running a few times years ago when I first got that too.
Did the same with my wife's Honda Pilot after driving the Model Y for a few months... she just rolled her eyes and said "this is one of those old fashioned cars where you actually have to turn it off and lock it when you leave". She's not a fan of walk away power down, but I love it!

I don't think my FOB is working as a proximity thing. I have to press unlock and lock on the FOB for the vehicle to respond to me standing right next to it.
The FOB does not automatically unlock the car as you walk up to it. Nor does it auto-lock as you walk away with the FOB. Only your phone will do that. I do feel like this was a miss for Rivian, they should have had the car unlock/lock as you approach/leave the vehicle.

Oh really? yeah that is strange. Tesla fob has been doing that since 2013.

I think Rivian may have overthought the key thing with all these options that aren’t consistent.

Good to know. My mistake was likely because I always had my phone tucked into my pants pocket. You're right, they sure should have made the fob do it the same way. I mean why the heck not???

Every time I put the Honda Ridgeline in "drive", the windshield wipers go on. I've walked away from it more than twice & had to go back & turn it off. "What's that noise?" - I left the ICE on....

It'll be close to Christmas (one side or the other) before I see an R1T with a big battery in the diveway.
Then my missus gets the not-much-ground-clearance Tesla.

1000% and then some. Hopefully they can bring out a passive keyfob that will be backwards compatible with the current T/S.

Or even better... maybe the current one already has the hardware needed, they just need to enable it, but are working out the bugs first. Dreams.

I like how you think, but I bet they were placing their bets on the phone key.

Tesla charges $150 (IIRC) for a FOB, but proximity unlock/lock make it well worth the $$$ IMO.

It's gotten better with every update. There are certain cases where my truck never went to sleep afterwards and ends up using a significant amount of energy to just exist. If Rivian gave us a way to force it asleep, I'd probably use it all the time.
Funny, I run an IoT hub in one of my houses. Cost me $100. I can set logic routines for almost any smart appliance, costing oh about $20 to hundreds, to turn on and off at times, or other smarter logic routines. Yet my future $90,000 car, can't tell it to turn off and sleep.

Yep. Did that right after bringing R1T home and moving my Prius out of driveway. Note the R1T is our 2nd EV. We also have a Model Y.
Not idiocy at all. This is absolutely normal for first time EV owners. I went through the same process with our Tesla.
What's a little scary, though, are the stories on the Tesla forum of folks with both an EV and a hybrid, and pulling the hybrid in the garage, putting it in Park (but still on) and walking away.
Congrats on your new truck!

Definitely takes some "getting used to" as this is not the case with my 2017 Chevy Bolt EV. It still has an on/off button, and I still don't feel comfortable walking away from my R1T in the parking lot while shopping at Publix until I hear the mountain bluebird chirp or see the door handles and side mirrors fold back in!

Curious but does this mean you have to turn off the stereo or turn down the volume every time you exit your vehicle (as to not disturb others) since there's no main "off" button to shut it off while exiting?

The stereo volume automatically lowers when the doors are opened.
