I was debating between buying new or used. If I bought new it would be Forest Green/Forest Edge Quad with 21” wheels. Hard build to find used, but I have found some nice builds.

One I am looking at is Forest Green/Black with 21” wheels. They are asking $85,675 and offering $52k trade for my GLE, as well as free delivery to ATL from out of State. Carvana offered $50.5k, another site offered $48k. However with the trade to the dealer, I get $2600 in tax savings. I don’t know what Rivian would offer on trade for the GLE if I bought a new one.

I’m not sure how to calculate savings. If Rivian offered me $50k on trade, then the used one would save me $4k vs new.

The used one has 4300 miles, and does have a few light scratches (not sure how light because the inspection report doesn’t say) and a small spot on the left rear door trim.

Thoughts?

Here are some pictures of the cosmetic issues on the used car. Feels like it should be more than 2k off MSRP with these light scratches and 4300 miles. Even these 2023 R1Ts go at auction in the high 70s (see cars and bids or bring a trailer for examples)

If the VIN is below 18000 or made before Feb 2023, I say get a new one.

There are reports Rivian is now casting their subframes directly onto the truck’s frame, rather than welding them like before. We don’t know exactly when the transition happened, but it seems safe to say Feb and after have the new subframe builds.

There isn’t inherently anything wrong with the previously welded subframe. But, some have had to get their subframes replaced here.

Here’s the thread that discusses this:

Must have been built before February. Carfax shows it was titled mid March and had 2193 miles at that point. So my guess is it was likely delivered to original owner in January.

Probably a Dec 2022 build. If you can see the car in person, you can verify by opening the driver’s door and looking for a white sticker in the door well. In the upper right of that sticker, you’ll see a mm/yy value for build month and year.

Thanks. I have detailed pictures from the vehicle inspection including the sticker. You are a gold mine of information. It is 12/22

I considered this very same question. I ultimately went with a used truck. The used truck had 220 miles on it and was a March 2023 built R1T in limestone. Paid just below 85 for it. Same truck would have been 88,500 new after price increases last year. So we save a few thousand.

Now, other things to consider are that you don't get the 7 day return period. Some lenders, if your financing the truck, may not allow you to get a new vehicle loan. Used loans have slightly higher rates and sometimes more stringent guidelines. Also, it will no longer be a 1 owner vehicle if/when you go to resell it. The last point is easily explained to a potential buyer later on though.

It takes about a week for Rivian to transfer ownership when you buy used. Ultimately, it depends on your expectations too. If you want/expect a pristine truck then best to buy new. I was lucky in that my truck was basically brand new when I got it.

The only thing it needs right now is an alignment (wheel off slightly to left) and the wheel Arch Trim is slightly loose where you press to open the charge port. First available service appt is in July.

Found another one where the owner says the window sticker was issued Jan 31 and took delivery Feb 24. Would this have the new subframe?

Personally, I don't think it matters and I'm actually regretting posting pictures of the new subframe. Their haven't been many reports of issues with subframes and we do not know why they chose the beginning of the year to switch from a machined/welded piece to a casting. We can guess and assume it is way cheaper to cast the piece and probably had a lot more to do with availability at the time production started. With that said, if it bugs you, ask for a picture of the front suspension behind then front brake, wherenthe lower control arm attaches to the chassis. That will give a definite answer. Otherwise, find a truck you like and makes financial sense.. then be happy with it.

I bought a used one in February even though my new one was set to deliver March/April. My decision was mostly based on the rumors and concerns if the binding agreement for tax incentives may or may not work if taking delivery this year. I ordered in May 2022 so didn’t get the pre-hike price unfortunately. We also were looking at getting a quad, Forest green and forest edge config. Our order was for 21” wheels, but the used one I found had the black 22s. With my pricing, the config we got would have been $98k new (including some accessories this one had with it). Mileage was higher on this one but that didn’t bother me (15k on a 6/22 build). Purchased for $80k from a Toyota dealer in Iowa.

The big selling point for me was getting the powered tonneau. I wasn’t going to pay $3k for that when I originally ordered, but did want to have it. Of course it worked when I bought it, then broke 6 days later after a ski trip lol. But Rivian will fix it for free this summer so I’ll be happy in the end.

Basically, I saved a few thousand even over my original build, and got several more features as a bonus. And actually, I like the 22s better than the 21s after some research (though I wouldn’t have paid the $3500 premium new). Problem with the 21s is there are zero options for tires other than the OE Pirellis, which are quite pricey.
