My R1S has about 6,500 miles on it, with the OEM 20” A/T tires. I recently noticed that both front tires are exhibiting the tread blocks chunking off. See the photos. The Rivian has not been used in any sort of hard core off reading, only some dirt and gravel roads and parking areas, and the rear tires are not exhibiting this type of tire wear at all.

And while I do use conserve mode on long drives on the highway, and know that may speed up wear, this looks more like damage that just faster wear. Anyone know if this is caused by bad alignment, or just happens, or perhaps the tires themselves are faulty?

This looks almost identical to the wear another person had a while back due to bad alignment…I’m not sure if ride height contributes or not…it could also be related to rough roads if you have particularly old/rough roads where you drive

Have seen another pic here with a similar issue, although I don’t recall it being every tread block like this. If it’s all on the outside I would say alignment has to be the prime culprit.

Thanks for the responses. Hopefully someone who has dealt with this directly will chime in. Although I have had the vehicle about 10 month, I just noticed this, and if it is alignment related, it may have come from the factory with a bad alignment…wondering if it is worth submitting a service request over it - and if Rivian would cover alignment cost from a local shop, given service centers are 3 hours from me, and assuming this cannot be handled by a mobile visit.

Doubtful at best whether Rivian might cover third-party repairs like this just because SC is not nearby.

My nearest SC is 300 miles away. As part of taking delivery of my vehicle, Rivian made it quite clear to me about the consequences and implications of the SC being so far and if I still wanted to take delivery under those conditions. Even for most in-warranty repairs. Only in very limited situations will Rivian cover transportation to and from SC. I accepted.

Looks like toe alignment. This can also be caused by driving too hard (likely breaking under steer). The latter is easy to achieve due to the high weight and power factors. Mine spends about four months a year on the ATS, and I definitely have to hold back relative to the 22s.
