I've been deep in thought on where to mount a headless GMRS mobile radio; it's a sold metal 7"x6"x2x block and has 3 sets of wires coming out for internal and external mounting. A huge pain.

My top spot right is to replace the deprecated fuse box hidden inside the passenger side dash, assuming it will fit. But I just realized that I haven't considered at all the passenger front airbag as well as the knee/leg airbag. Where are these deployed from? Besides finding a safe place to hide the heavy brick of a head unit I'll also be removing trim/panels poking around passing wires through the firewall to frunk area, and I want to have an idea of what I should watch out for.

Pics I've found of the service manual suggest the passenger airbag is above the wood trim/veneer?

And the knee airbag seems to be flexible panel above the footwell?

I think I will need to remove this entire trim piece to do the things that need to be done, and it should generally be clear of explosive bits?

Hoping those who have done work around this area can provide a bit of insight. If this area doesn't work out, I'll probably aim for something behind the frunk tub.

Check your Owner's Guide - it shows the locations of all the airbags.

I've found quite a few pictures and videos of driver airbag deploys (and that's coming out of the steering wheel so easy to identify), but haven't yet seen where the passenger airbag is stored/deployed from.

Yep, I've seen the picture, but it doesn't show where the airbag deploys from on the dash. Is it above the wood paneling, below it, somewhere else?

Passenger airbags almost always deploy out of the top of the dash by levering the dash trim up with a cut-out.

As an alternate opinion, I put my radio under the passenger seat and ran all the cabling from there. I thought it was a pretty non-invasive setup and had a by-product of having good ventilation on the unit. You can tuck it up pretty far under there depending on the size.

My wife and I walked away with minor whiplash - the truck saved our lives.
OMG is that YOUR crash?? So glad to hear you and your wife were OK coming out of it!!

Thanks for the pics! My kids are frequently in the backseat, don't think I can impinge on the footwell area too much (also I know the Gen2 12v battery is there, which may make it super-easy to route power, but probably means less space as well.

One thing I'm running into with the RJ45 mic - if I use any CAT6 extension, it introduces audio artifacts (constant clicking when squelch is open) to the speaker. I haven't found a solution yet, other than to use the speaker in the headunit.

Oh, l love the molle boards against the center storage area!

I've seen this happen before, make sure the RJ45 isn't running parallel to the power cables. The power can induce current in the data cable... hopefully you can figure it out though!
