I am tentatively scheduled to pick up my R1S Monday the 18th. I have filled out most of the information. I’m out of town and haven’t sent a copy of a cashier or certified check. Today I was notified that I needed to wire them the money. Has anyone else paid for their vehicle before they saw it ? Is this standard operating for Rivian?

Yes, S.O.P

Your pickup experience is not a sales experience. At least that's the idea. And you can still refuse the vehicle until you sign to accept it. So you will get to inspect.

As others have said, you can work it a different way if you need/want to.

Paid cash for the vehicle via ACH about 2 days before delivery and before I saw it.

I thought this post was about what to do before you picked up your date.

Thanks guys. I'm just old fashioned and still enjoy seeing the product I'm buying, shaking hands, and handing over the check. My daughters remind me that "Times they are a changin". I better adjust.

The Rivian delivery experience is definitely different than what you would find at a dealer. You sign a few times, they do a walk around of your vehicle with you, mostly to show you the basics of how it works, but you should also pay attention for any obvious issues during that time.

Some folks bring a checklist and do a more thorough inspection because they aren't comfortable driving off the lot like that, but I just looked for major things and did a more thorough inspection the next day at home, after the excitement had gone down a bit. I figured there was little chance I was going to actually refuse delivery so in my mind I should do the inspection in my own garage where I can take my time. If I found anything I was going to ask them to fix it, not return the truck anyway...

Overall I found the Rivian delivery to be the best I have ever experienced. It was fast and informational and I was enjoying my new truck in no time...

I had the same reaction. Take a few minutes (or hours) to go over the vehicle. Just look for anything out of the ordinary.

Based on comments in this forum, looked for the following:
1. Gap spacing between the body panels / ease of closing all doors
2. Stitching around the steering wheel and the back cover
3. All bolts on the under body shield present and tight.
4. Everything you preordered (like mats and crossbars)
5. Paint/scratches/bumps
6. Chips in any glass
7. Anything in the tire tread
8. All windows auto opening and closing
9. Abnormal clunking when driving

For my R1S, the upper and lower lift gates were skewed to one side. Also, one of the stitches in the steering wheel cover was off, leaving an edge sticking out. And one side of the back of the steering wheel (where the tips of your fingers touch the back cover) was a bit squishy (a tiny delamination). All cosmetic.

What I thought was abnormal clicking when I first drove it turned out to be the air compressor adjusting the height of the truck.

And congratulations on the purchase!

That is SO true!

I was expecting the ubiquitous crappy dealer extra warranty sales showdown and was surprised when there wasn’t one. Once I understood that there was no additional hard sell on extra service options, I started to like the purchase process.

The gang is correct about this being SOP but a word of warning. I ended up getting a credit after I paid but before I picked it up. Almost 3 months now and still no cheque and no one can tell me what’s happening with the delay. Hopefully it will show up before the tonneau cover that I also paid for and didn’t get.

I brought a cashier check (and sent a pic beforehand). They still ask for the check right when you walk in the door though so it's still sight unseen but yea, a friendly helpful experience.

My experience was a little less organized because on a Friday they told me that it would be at least a week before my R1S would be ready and then the next morning (Saturday) they asked me what time would be good for a pickup on the coming Monday. I pointed out that there was no way for me to transfer funds on the weekend so we pushed pickup to Tuesday and I made the transfer Monday morning.

So reading these stories of having to transfer funds and at least one of overpayment and slow refund, I wonder if it is better to go with the Rivian financing and pay it off immediately. I would enjoy hearing other thoughts.

Yes, it's time to adjust, as per your daughter ;). It is really an odd experience. Paying for an $80K vehicle in full without ever laying eyes on it.....but, that is the SOP.....welcome to the Rivian club!
