So yeah, their development/prototyping facility is in Michigan.:

"Plymouth, MI. Our Plymouth location operates as a vehicle development, prototyping and testing facility and administrative center."

So definitely testing something. IDK why they would be on PCH. Unless there is no reason and they just needed to drive somewhere. Maybe Irvine -> Newport -> back to Irvine.

Rivian has said there’s a lot of overlap between the underlying components of the R1 and R2.

Whatever they’re testing is likely common across both models.

Those are some short windows between A-B and B-C pillars. Would be nice to see it compared to standard R1S. Would also be nice to not see a hand in the reflection or sideview mirror...

That's just the low perspective and lensing of the phone camera. Just like the other nothing-burger photos that people have argued exhaustively over of late. You've got to pay attention to known clues in the photo. In this case (as in many others), the wheel that we know is 20" and can use for scale. The R1S has a third row and need large rear doors to provide manageable access to that third row. That is precisely why it has that fixed window in the rear doors. The R2 does not have this. The doors are not as big.

There's a lot of third party/contracted hardware vendors that operate out of Michigan as well. I see M plates on everything. This was earlier in the week. Yeah that weird stuff above the car was on it.
