If you want spacing on a 7 character personalized plate, read this:
So after 6 moths i finally received my 2 Personalized Legacy plates one week apart. My first order has 7 characters but wanted to have a space to read it like 2 words. I wanted it to be in this format (example only: XXX XXXX) but the online system has only 7 boxes to fill your characters. On the comment box section where you have to explain the meaning, I added a note where I want the spacing.
A week after that, I ordered another personalized plate with only 6 characters because I had doubts on my first order that it will not come out as I hoped for. On this order I wanted it to appear as XXX XXX (not the actual characters I ordered). So when I checked those plates that I so long waited (did I say 6 months?), they were all one word, no spacing! Both of them!
So I managed to contact DMV and actually talked to a human being and they were surprised as well because they couldn't believed me that you only get 7 boxes to fill online as opposed to the paper form where you get 8 for the spacing.
So 6 months of waiting was all in vain and I still have to wait another phone call from DMV license plate department of whether they can correct it, get me a refund or tell me it's my fault because I don't have proof that I wanted that spacing.
So my advise is do the paper form and mail it if you want some spacing. If you do it online, take a picture of every step because the email receipt that you will receive will not show that.
