We're in the same boat as others here... Keeping our reservation for now, but the interior of the R1S will probably be too tight for our family of 6. It's more difficult because we're tall--I'm 6' 4". We recently went from an XC90 to a VW Atlas and the extra space makes a big difference. It would be hard to go back.

I suspect we will end up in an EV9. I'm open to the EX90 but haven't seen much on 2nd and 3rd row space, not surprisingly.
I just switched from an Atlas to an R1S. I am very tall (6'7) and the R1S feels very different from the Atlas. I sit much better in the R1S than in the Atlas. The seat is higher and I sit much closer forward due to the foot space under and in front of the steering wheel. This is the first time between a BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Jeep Wrangler, and VW Atlas that I am sitting in front of the B-Pillar.
The Atlas is more spacious on the inside. It's higher from floor to ceiling and feels wider. The trunk in the Atlas feels higher as well and there is more second-row legroom depending on how the seats are adjusted, but everyone has given the feedback that the second row in the R1S is much more comfortable and so is the 3rd row. The Atlas was my holdover vehicle while waiting for the R1S and 1.5 years turned into 3.5 years. The R1S is a luxurious, insanely fast vehicle that allows me to transport my family of 4 and a large dog easily and the frunk is a huge benefit when the dog takes up a lot of space in the back and I don't need a sportscar to have fun when I am alone...I can do this in my family vehicle...win-win.
I test-drove the BMW X7 and the R1S feels pretty much just like the X7 interior space-wise but with better legroom and headroom.
If the EV 9 is like the Telluride it will be a really nice and spacious car, but it won't compare anywhere remotely to the R1S performance-wise.
My Cayenne GTS was nice and fast, especially after a chip tuning, but it was slow compared to the R1S. For a family of 6, especially a tall family it might be a little small, but we are talking American dimensions, in Europe people would think it's a cavernous monster.

I agree with many above that it is all about use case. I have a family of 5 in a rural area and we have a Pacifica for road trips. My R1S will allow for me to use no gas for 99% of my business driving and for shorter trips with the family. We definitely aren't getting rid of the van.

Rivian is very tight inside for its exterior dimensions, which makes some sense given the beefy frame and offroad hardware. I can live with the compromised space efficiency, but they need to be realistic and make a long-wheelbase R1S to accommodate families who actually need to use the third row. The solution is simple - put the SUV body onto the 14 inch longer R1T chassis. Throw in captains chairs too. This also solves the handling woes of the short wheelbase R1S.
They could also just move the third row 4-6 inches back, there is plenty of room behind it.

For those who have been in one, how does the interior space feel compared to a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I can certainly tell that cargo space behind second row (at least diagonally) is bigger than my Palisade. I can fit my skis diagonally where previously I had to use the pass through between captains chairs with Palisade.

but the second row legroom is definitely smaller! My 2 years old can kick to the back of the driver’s seat which he could not do with my palisade (very scientific test. Lol).

I am having a similar issue. I had a grand cherokee (not three rows) and thought that a three row SUV would give me a lot more room in the second row. Just the opposite! My little Jeep had the same (lack) of leg room but a MUCH smaller size overall.
My three year old CANNOT FIT in the second row with a Nuna Rava car seat. I’m going to kick the can buy moving him to the passenger side and moving my daughters smaller car seat to the driver side but that will only buy me a year or two. I honestly expect to get bored of this car and trade into something more practical at that point.
