Heat draws much more power than AC, about 2.5kWh/hour from my rough experience. That alone explains your efficiency difference.

Now I want to test how much the heat uses. Thanks for the inspiration!
oh wow!! Ok that’s significant. How do you find these metrics? Is there a menu that I’m missing or electrafi or something else?

The PTC heater in our Lightning draws 6-7 kW on max heat and I'm guessing the Rivian will be close to that.

I have the same 25 mile 35 minute each way commute every day, I just hit the trip reset and record/compare data. As with any data, you need to control as many other variables as possible when isolating one (heat use in this case) so in my testing, I'll compare similar starting temps on equipment and cabin, outdoor temps, rain vs dry, ensure tire pressure is the same, etc

The efficiency depends on many things but I agree that the mileage of R1S is less stellar. I only managed to get ~2 miles/kwh for mixed road usage in the mild Texas climate for my R1S quad.

How has the dual motor driving overall? Any negatives compared to the quad? I have a quad ready for delivery but on fence about dual performance for efficiency and sound levels…but dont want to compromise… i never punch my X so i guess the little bit speed difference wont make much of a real difference for me…early pricing so dual perf and quad are basically same cost and 7k more gets max pack…

It drives very well. No complaints or concerns whatsoever. It primarily runs as a FWD. with rear motors coming in only when you need the acceleration. I drove a quad for the test drive and if my memory serves me well the dual is quieter than the quad. Less gear/ motor whine.

I had the early pricing too. The base dual is same price as quad the perf is about 2K more and the max pack adds another 3K. And my green color was 1K more. At least that was my math.

Pretty abysmal. To get the EPA stated range of 400 miles I need to get an efficiency of 2.8 mi/ kWh which I dont see happening at all unless I keep it at 60-65
Keep in mind that the EPA test cycle assumes that you drive quite slowly. Even the "High Speed" portion of the test has an average speed of 48 MPH. You shouldn't expect to see any vehicle match it's EPA rating at speeds higher than 50MPH.

I don't think anyone at the EPA bothered to drive on an actual highway when they were coming up with the "highway" test cycle. Is there any highway in the country where the average speed is as low as 48mph when the traffic is "free-flow"?

They also assume an 18 second 0-60 on most of the tests. It is hard to believe it is even possible to accelerate that slowly in a Rivian. ;) I know I couldn't do it even if I tried.

With that said do you wish at all you had gone with quad?

i do like the yellow calibers and markings of quad :)

we drive on highway here around 80mph…. So range expectations are going to be way lower than capacity on any version….

i assume at higher highway speeds and lower efficiency the delta of 40 or 80 probably will only be realized of 20-40 miles over the long range quad…. Around town that is where i see the extra range making a big difference at higher efficiencies….

Nope. Not in the slightest. I am very happy with my choice. Even with the stupidly priced Max pack.

The Enduro motors are in house designed and built by Rivian. It’s a better design and lighter overall. I have 21” wheels so really can’t see and truly don’t care for the yellow calipers and yellow stripe in the badge. With quad you get a year longer or 10K longer warranty. But again in my mind I don’t worry about that.

yes efficiency has been my biggest disappointment but honestly it’s a brick so you can’t cheat physics. Now that I’ve owned it for a couple of weeks I am tracking 2mi/ kWh average. I have seen as high as 3 mi/ kWh

I have no complaints and would do Dual motor again. I have only owned rear wheel, all wheel or 4WD vehicles; though the females in my life have had some front wheel drive ones. I've done road racing, stock car racing, Rockcrawling and everything in between.

I was worried about the front wheel drive automatic mode. Turns out it is completely transparent. If I try, I can sense when it engages the rear motor again but it's tough to tell. Much less than the drivetrain lash in any of my ICE vehicles. Under any kind of torque or starting from a stop, it uses both. I think they had to make it front drive in eco so that regen braking would be safe. Makes sense to put the efficient motor up front too. I haven't even been able to try full send in Sport mode. Too much traffic. Even normal dual motor mode is seriously quick with the same crazy torque steer the quad does. No avoiding that but there's no torque steer under normal driving which I was worried about. My 430hp Audi has no torque steer. It's superbly engineered for speed and handling but also doesn't have to accommodate a foot of suspension travel. You can lock the dual motor in AWD with any of the other modes but no need really.

Sound levels are tough to compare since it's been a while since I drove the quad. Seems to me they both had a bit of motor whine on acceleration. It's a pleasant sound that replaces the drone of an ICE motor and disappears under low power. It's all the other sounds that become noticeable in such a quiet vehicle. Mostly bumps and road noise suspension type stuff that dominates just like in the quad. I have the 22s which are noticeably rougher/firmer than the 20s (or 21s? I don't recall). I'd say Macan type ride. EV manufacturers really have a higher standard of silence to try to meet since ICE vehicles hide that stuff.
